Olóládé review: A laughable, poorly produced drama

Olóládé follows two friends who suddenly come into a ton of money and rejoice before discovering that with their wealth comes many problems. The series is streaming on Netflix.

Story

Shina and Lateef are two friends who are down on their luck and unhappy with the way their lives are going. When Lateef is involved in someone’s death, it ends up being financially beneficial for him.

Meanwhile, Shina has a random encounter at the bank that leads to the sudden arrival of great wealth. These friends decide to enjoy their good fortunes but they soon find out that with these gifts come serious consequences.

Lateef is dealing with the guilt of covering up a death, while Shina learns that the money belonged to some very dangerous people. Their lives are more stressful than they were before and they don’t know how to get out.

Performances

The entire cast hams it up throughout the series. The level of overacting is ridiculous and despite the drama tag, it mostly feels like a comedy because of some of the performances.

Positives

The initial concept had promise and if the story had been written better with decisions made about the tone they wanted to depict, the series would have been more interesting.

Negatives

The production value is absolutely abysmal with poor locations, lighting, camera work, and practically all aspects of the series. The lines are delivered dryly and the editing is also suspect.

The casual infidelity written into the narrative and how it’s played out as something normal is disappointing. The characters do not react appropriately to the situation they are in.

The melodrama in the series is something that belongs on daytime television, not on a streaming platform. While providing a bigger audience, it doesn’t look like the streaming giant provided much more and that is very clear.

The supernatural aspect is hinted at often but when it is shown to be real, it comes across as hilarious rather than shocking. Even the intimacy scenes are pedestrian and could have been improved with a coordinator.

Verdict

Olóládé wishes to tell a specific story with many messages weaved into its narrative but it is let down by a poor execution. There is so much lacking from the series and cannot be considered something more audiences should tune into.
