Spy x Family season 2 episode 4 recap & review

In Spy x Family season 2 episode 4, Anya and her friends fight for the Pastry of Knowledge, while Yor helps Franky find a cat. The episode is now streaming on Netflix.

Recap

The Pastry of Knowledge is one of Eden Academy’s seven wonders. A mysterious pastry chef randomly appears in the cafeteria every year and serves exquisite desserts.

It is said that whoever ate these deserts later became Imperial Scholars. Since then, rumor has it that these deserts instantly make one smarter.

At the end of the term, students will be divided into classes according to their academic ability, which means if Anya doesn’t perform well, she will end up in the class for students with lower grades and will be left alone, while her best friend, Becky, because of her decent grades, will be in another class.

At a time like this, news spreads that the Pastry of Knowledge has appeared in Dining Hall Two. This year, it is macarons. Anya, Becky, and even Damian and his two friends make a run for it.

The last plate of the macarons remains, and George ends up buying it. George is willing to share, but there are only five macarons. One of them will have to give up on the Pastry of Knowledge.

Anya, Becky, Damian, and his friends decide who will get the macarons by playing a game of cards. At first, Anya, who doesn’t know how to play cards at all, wins by reading everyone’s minds.

The moment she realizes that people will find out about her secret and her father’s mission will fail, she asks for another round, in which she intentionally makes mistakes.

Anya thinks she can still win this game if she manages to hand Damian the Joker card. However, Damian easily reads her face and figures out which card he needs to pick.

In the end, Becky and Damian’s friends win one by one. Only Anya and Damian remain in the game. Damian almost wins the game, but after seeing Anya cry, he picks up the wrong card and lets Anya win.

Anya offers to split the macaron and share it with Damian, whose face turns red. Damian rejects Anya’s offer, claiming that he can become an Imperial Scholar without eating something like that.

Anya eats the macaron. She feels some sort of energy inside her that makes her study hard. Unfortunately, she still ends up getting low scores. Loid admires that at least Anya has improved from before.

What surprises Loid the most is that Anya has done well in the classical language test. She only lost points because of spelling mistakes. He wonders if Anya has learned this language in the past. The Forger household ends the day with delicious food on the table.

On another day, Franky seeks Loid’s help for a mission. He is trying to find Kopi, a cat who belongs to Kacey, who works at Franky’s favorite cafe.

Franky thinks if he finds Kopi, he might have a chance with Kacey. However, Loid coldly walks away from Franky. A furious Franky is then more determined to find Kopi all by himself.

Franky contacts all the spies he knows, and one of them informs him that a cat that resembles Kopi is near the city hall. Franky goes to the city hall and crosses paths with Yor, who is on a lunch break.

Yor volunteers to help Franky find the cat. Franky makes use of several of his gadgets to find Kopi. With the help of one of his gadgets, he releases the scent of catnip to lure cats in.

The device attracts lots of cats. Franky spots Kopi. After using a couple more gadgets to catch Kopi, Franky brings out an exoskeleton suit he has built for himself. He has worked on this suit for 10 years.

Before Franky can use that suit, Yor destroys a part of it and throws it in front of Kopi to stop the cat from running away. She successfully catches the cat and hands it to Franky.

Franky takes Kopi to Kacey, only to find out that Kacey is already with someone. A heartbroken Franky then decided to live only for his work.

Yor, on the other hand, is happy after helping someone. The fact that her employees say she looks normal with that smile further gives her relief until she receives a call, which is actually for Thorn Princess.

Review

  • The plot around the Pastry of Knowledge teases that there is a lot out there at Eden that the anime can explore. The question remains whether the show will be able to hold the attention of the viewers until then. Fortunately, this episode at least brings some better subplots.
  • The Pastry of Knowledge plot has its funny moments, but the heartfelt moments shine over them. The sweet gestures of Anya and Damian are adorable, and a shy Damian is always welcome.
  • Coming to the plot involving Franky, watching Franky and Yor work together gave viewers something fresh, but their dynamic isn’t explored in depth.
  • Lastly, one can guess the kind of twists that Spy x Family is going to drop to make viewers laugh, yet they work. It’s mostly the reactions of the characters that are hilarious. In this episode’s case, it’s Franky’s reaction after learning that Kacey is with someone.
