With ‘Star Wars: Visions’ set to release on Disney+, Disney+ Hotstar on the September 22, the galaxy far, far away sets its foot in anime, returning to its root inspiration.
Disney-owned Lucasfilm announced the arrival of nine short films from seven studios in the anthology animated series ‘Star Wars: Visions’ during Anime Expo Lite with a three-minute sneak peek into the creation.
Executive producer James Waugh said at Anime Expo Lite:
“We really wanted to give these creators a wide creative berth to explore all the imaginative potential of the Star Wars galaxy through the unique lens of anime. We realised we wanted these to be as authentic as possible to the studios and creators who are making them, made through their unique process, in a medium they’re such experts at
“So, the idea was, this is their vision riffing off all the elements of the Star Wars galaxy that inspired them — hopefully to make a really incredible anthology series, unlike anything we’ve seen before in the Star Wars galaxy,” Waugh added.
The nine short films comprising ‘Star Wars: Visions’, along with the studios who created them, are –
- Kamikaze Douga – ‘The Duel’
- Kinema Citrus – ‘The Village Bride’
- Geno Studio (Twin Engine) – ‘Lop and Ochō’
- Production IG – ‘The Ninth Jedi’
- Science Saru – ‘Akakiri’
- Science Saru – ‘T0-B1’
- Studio Colorido (Twin Engine) – ‘Tatooine Rhapsody’
- Trigger – ‘The Twins’
- Trigger – ‘The Elder’
Each short film will bring its unique tonality to the narration by combining Japanese structures to its Star Wars creativity. To state a few – ‘The Duel’, by Kamikaze Douga, is a primarily black-and-white short film about samurai-like Jedi and Sith warriors. ‘Tatooine Rhapsody’ by Studio Colorido is a Chibi-style rock opera, while ‘T0-B1’ by Science Saru is about a droid who dreams to be a Jedi.
