What is Angel Dust in City Hunter (2024)?

Angel Dust, an extremely potent new drug that has taken the streets of Shinjuku by storm, is the source of much of the conflict in Netflix’s new action-comedy, City Hunter.

Shinjuku is rife with violence and crime in general. The city witnesses an unusual spike when a new drug hits the street.

Private Eye Ryo Saeba, better known, and feared, as City Hunter, is on a case involving the rescue of a girl named Kurumi.

She is one of the test subjects to whom this drug was administered, but out of all the subjects, only she has survived and lived to tell the tale.

As Ryo digs deeper into the drug and the organization that is pushing it into the veins of unsuspecting people, new details emerge.

Angel Dust

The drug in question is called Angel Dust. It was used in warfare but it was eventually banned because it was deemed inhumane.

The drug affects the subject rather severely. It makes them hyper-violent out of nowhere as they gain extreme athletic abilities.

Their nerves become visible and inflated, as they break out in violent attacks made all the more ferocious by the inhuman boost in strength.

It affects the brain of the subject first, then they become violent, before shortly dying.

The Union & its function

Angel Dust is being worked on by Union Teope, a criminal organization with roots in Central America.

They’ve got their claws on the world economy, making them a formidable entity. The company Lore serves as a front for their activities in Japan.

They’ve been mainlining truckloads of funds into the company and the drug peddling. It also serves as their base in Japan, and inside its high-tech facility are kept many test subjects.

Applications most far-reaching

They kidnap runaway kids and unhoused people and forcefully subject them to trials and tests. Most of their subjects end up dying.

But one doesn’t — Kurumi. With her DNA, they can finally modify Angel Dust so that its side effects are eliminated.

This makes the drug the perfect fit for warfare around the world, which stands to make a fortune for Union Teope.
