Plot summary

Rapper Vince Staples is arrested for speeding. However, he is somehow booked for assault. In jail, he finds some of his fans in the form of cops.

He also meets Robb, who is crazy about Vince and is a musician himself. He keeps nagging Vince about his music and singing in front of him.

What troubles Vince the most is another inmate named Poke, who wants to smash Vince for some reason.

Vince keeps calling his family, hoping they will get him out. Unfortunately, nobody is willing to come to his rescue.

The clock keeps ticking, and Poke doesn’t take his eyes off Vince. Eventually, Vince questions Poke about why he is after him.

Poke reveals that he wants to smash Vince because Vince is from a certain place. Vince’s attempts to mend things with Poke fail.

Fortunately, Vince is let go, as the cops took him for someone else. Back home, he keeps everything that happened to him from his girlfriend.

In hopes of starting a cereal brand of his own, Vince visits a bank for a loan. However, the bank manager, Mr. Hightower, explains how it’s risky to give loans to artists. Hence, Vince can’t have a loan.

Before Vince can walk out of the bank, robbers break in and take everyone hostage. One of the robbers, Nicky, turns out to be Vince’s friend.

Vince hangs out with the robbers instead of walking out. Mr. Hightower is forced to seek Vince’s help because he wishes to walk out of this alive. Vince is ready to help him if he gives him his loan.

After talking to Nicky, Vince demands $10 million and a helicopter from Mr. Hightower, who doesn’t know the code to the bank’s vault but tells Vince where it could be.

Using the clues he gets, Vince cracks the code. Unfortunately, someone has already carried out a heist at the bank. Vince and Nicky get nothing.

It’s time for Vince to leave. He suggests to Nicky that he should let the hostages go in pairs from time to time.

Mr. Hightower is allowed to walk out with Vince. Once they are out, Mr. Hightower gets shot, as he doesn’t follow the instructions given by the cops.

Vince brings along his girlfriend, Deja, for his family reunion. Vince’s mother, Anita, doesn’t like Deja very much.

Things get worse when Anita finds out that the color of the dress code for the reunion has changed and that someone else has brought the same dish as hers. Anita’s mood is ruined more than before.

It’s Deja who makes her understand that she is a bully who is difficult to get along with. She is always whining about little things, and she should learn to let go.

In the meantime, Vince has some much-needed conversation with his Uncle James about how to handle people when you are successful.

Anita finally finds out who brought the same dish. The day ends with the family fighting with each other.

Vince tags along with Deja and her brother, Dee Dee, to Park Hoppers. Deja plans to celebrate her brother’s birthday to the fullest.

While Deja gets into a fight with a shopkeeper who claims they are stealing t-shirts from his shop, Vince is paranoid about a mascot who keeps staring at him.

Soon, Vince finds himself surrounded by a gang of mascots who all beat him up. Dee Dee’s birthday ends with Deja and Vince fighting while Dee Dee cuts the cake.

Ending explained:

White Boy

Vince is called to his school to share his success story with kids like him. One of the kids claims that his father knows Vince. His father’s name is Vincent too, and he used to go by the nickname White Boy.

However, he says that his father and Vince are not friends. When Vince comes face-to-face with White Boy outside the school, White Boy uses his gun to shoot at Vince.

White Boy’s motives

The show doesn’t reveal why White Boy is after Vince. It is only hinted that this White Boy probably holds some childhood animosity against Vince, who might be in danger now.

After being shot at, Vince finds himself on the run. He retrieves a gun from a house and heads straight into a shopping center when he is spotted by White Boy again.

White Boy’s death

After a gunshot, only Vince comes out of the shopping center. He returns home to watch television with his girlfriend, Deja, who asks him how the day was.

Vince doesn’t share with her what went down. News on television mentions a series of shootouts and a fatality, with no suspects at the time.

The show ends with White Boy’s son watching the commercial for Vince Staples’ new cereal brand.
