Plot summary:

Reacher continues to lead a nomadic existence for a few years following the events in Margrave until he receives an urgent distress call from Neagley.

She urgently summons him to New York after the gruesome discovery of the lifeless body of their former teammate, Calvin Franz, deep within a forest.

Calvin Franz had been subjected to horrific torture before being brutally murdered, prompting Neagley to seek Reacher’s assistance in unearthing the truth behind this heinous crime.

During their military service, Reacher had established the 110th MP Special Investigations Unit, a team dedicated to uncovering irregularities within the army.

The unit comprised Reacher himself, Neagley, David O’Donnell, Karla Dixon, Jorge Sanchez, Manuel Orozco, Tony Swan, Stanley Lowrey, and Calvin Franz.

Neagley informs Reacher of Lowrey’s tragic death in a car accident several years ago, leaving the fate of the other team members shrouded in mystery.

As Reacher and Neagley commence their investigation into Franz’s murder, they decide to delve into the last case he had been working on.

Their search reveals signs of a break-in at Franz’s home and office, indicating that someone had been desperately searching for something.

David O’Donnell rejoins the team, having recently returned from a family retreat with minimal screen time. His transformation from a playboy during his military service is evident.

The team proceeds to investigate Swan’s whereabouts, only to find his residence abandoned and a lifeless dog.

Their grim discovery suggests that someone is systematically targeting the Special Investigators.

Detective Guy Russo, tasked with investigating Franz’s murder, begins trailing Reacher and his associates.

However, Reacher, unaware of Russo’s identity, incapacitates him before receiving an explanation.

The team decides to travel to Atlantic City in pursuit of Sanchez and Orozco, eventually encountering Karla Dixon en route.

They piece together that Franz had recruited Sanchez and Orozco for the same case he was working on.

Tragically, they receive news that Sanchez and Orozco suffered a fate identical to Franz’s, with their lifeless bodies discovered in the same forest.

Despite their efforts, the mystery surrounding the elusive 650 million dollar score that Franz had been pursuing remains unsolved.

Russo eventually reconciles with Reacher and agrees to collaborate.

A significant breakthrough comes in the form of a lead pointing to an individual named A. M., revealed to be an arms dealer and a top fugitive on Interpol’s list.

Upon encountering assailants sent after Reacher and Dixon, they swiftly neutralize the threat and trace their trail to a company named New Age Technologies.

It emerges that Swan is a member of New Age’s security team, with Shane Langston identified as the mastermind behind the attacks.

New Age had secured a government contract for missiles, and Langston intends to sell 650 of them to an undisclosed third party through A. M.

With the motive unraveled, the team mobilizes to locate A. M. and prevent Langston from completing the sinister deal.

Despite Reacher’s belief in Swan’s innocence, mounting evidence suggests his complicity, a sentiment shared by his teammates.

Russo uncovers that his superior has been compromised, accepting bribes to keep Langston informed about the ongoing investigation.

After Russo’s secret is exposed, his superior dispatches a group of men to eliminate him.

Russo heroically sacrifices himself to protect a young girl before Reacher’s team can arrive to assist.

As Reacher and Neagley follow leads to ascertain the weapons sale location, Dixon and O’Donnell are entrusted with safeguarding a critical witness.

Langston subsequently orders the abduction of Dixon and O’Donnell, demanding Reacher’s surrender.

Ending explained:

Who does Reacher recruit for help?

New Age secured the contract thanks to a senator named Lavoy. After entrapping his aide, they learn about the Little Wing project and the capabilities of the missiles.

Lavoy later summons Reacher to make a request. He asks Reacher to retrieve the missiles by any means necessary because it is in Lavoy’s best interests to keep things quiet.

When Reacher is called to New Age, he tells Langston that Neagley died, and then asks Lavoy to spare his security team, who are all former special forces.

Along with Neagley, the four-man team assaulted the facility.

What happened to Tony Swan?

The New Age director, Marlo tells Reacher and his team that Swan was investigating Langston’s activities after she raised some doubts.

They find that hard to believe because he signed off on the shipment of the stolen missiles which requires a fingerprint and retina scan.

When Reacher, Dixon, and O’Donnell are restrained by Langston’s men, he reveals what he did.

He offered to cut Swan in, but when the former investigator refused, Langston had him culled and cut off his finger, and cut out his eye.

What happens to Langston?

When the assault takes place, Langston rushes to the helicopter that was about to fly away with Dixon and O’Donnell.

Reacher goes after them and jumps onto the helicopter. A scuffle breaks out in mid-air and eventually pulling himself up into the chopper, Langston is pushed off.

He falls at great force to suffer the same fate he put Reacher’s team through.

Do Reacher and his team stop the deal?

The team finally heads over to the ranch where AM is supposed to learn how to operate the missiles.

AM tries to make his case but the team has no time for his pleas and they shoot him down.

After killing the other members of the New Age team, Reacher and his crew are held hostage by Lavoy’s security team who want to tie up all loose ends.

However, Reacher’s contacts at Homeland Security arrive as Reacher anticipated this moment and planned for it.

While the authorities make the arrests, Reacher and his crew leave with the money that was meant for he deal.

The others give Reacher the responsibility of spending the money, and he gives a little to each member of his team as well as sharing some with everyone who helped the on the case.
