Is Miles Valence dead or alive in Rabbit Hole?

After Miles Valence’s unceremonious death in the first episode of Rabbit Hole, the sixth episode hints that the CEO of Arda Analytics is still alive and in touch with Weir.

The characters in Rabbit Hole have been really good at deceiving people, and most of them, including Miles, have learned this art from Ben’s research called The Algorithms of Control.

A person who has practiced the methods mentioned in the research has been able to manipulate people into believing and doing something and has even managed to disappear from the face of the earth.

The fact that Weir’s original team had made such elaborate preparations to fake their death proves that anyone who knows The Algorithms of Control and is considered dead might not really be dead.

Miles Valence and John Weir made careers out of this research. Therefore, Valence’s death left a lot of questions unanswered, and he once again becomes the topic of discussion when Hailey notices that Weir is, for some reason, trying to contact him even though he is dead.

Why does Weir contact Valence?

Weir had been sending texts to someone in the chatroom of a mobile videogame. Hailey deduces that it’s Valence, and when she tells Ben about it, he says that they might have had a back channel going.

Hailey questions what e-mailing a dead friend means, and Ben says that Weir is just not thinking clearly and that he needs help. By the end of the episode, this person on the other side starts replying as if he is Miles Valence.

In the seventh episode of Rabbit Hole, it is revealed that even Weir isn’t sure if the person who is talking to him is really Miles Valence. All this person says is that they can’t trust Ben in the exact tone that Valence would.

Weir starts losing sense of what is real and what is not. Only Valence knows how to pull him out of this, and he is just not around. Weir’s worries are further exacerbated when his ex-wife receives a parcel from Valence.

Inside Valence’s parcel

Weir picks up the parcel, which has a piece of Gilgamesh inside it. He starts walking back to his hideout. On his way, Kyle, his boss, and Crowley confront Weir.

Kyle’s boss and Crowley convince him that Ben has been using Weir and Valence all along. After talking to Crowley, Weir confronts Ben back at their hideout.

While they argue, Homm retrieves the drive hidden inside the piece of Gilgamesh and plays the video on it on a laptop. The video is a confession from Miles Valence.

What happened to Miles Valence?

In the video, Valence reveals that Crowley has outplayed him. Crowley wanted no loose ends in the Homm operation, so he asked Valence to kill Weir, something Valence won’t do, which means Crowley will have to come for both of their heads.

To buy Weir and Ben some time, Valence decided to kill himself. He sent this video through the mail, hoping that Weir would receive it later and understand why Valence did what he did.

Valence’s confession also revealed that Crowley had somehow infiltrated Arda Analytics, which means he had access to Valence’s data. Crowley was the one pretending to be Valence and sending Weir those messages to turn Weir against his own father.

Crowley almost succeeded in doing so, but Valence’s video and his plan helped. Valence is not alive, but he managed to aid his lifelong best friend one last time in this battle against Crowley.
