Your Christmas or Mine 2 review: Uninspired holiday film that has countless contemporaries

In Your Christmas or Mine 2, James and Hayley’s families head to the Alps for Christmas, only to encounter a comical mix-up. The film is streaming on Prime Video.

Story

Hayley and James are headed to the Swiss Alps along with their families for a Christmas holiday but thanks to an unfortunate booking mishap, they are split up.

While the Taylor family gets to enjoy the lavish hotel that Humphrey had booked, the Hughes family is stuck somewhere well below their approvable standards after Geoff decided to trust a sketchy travel agent.

Along the way, there are some misunderstandings as James and Hayley question whether they have different expectations from each other about their relationships. However, the holidays are for family and connection and everything sorts itself out eventually.

Performances

Asa Butterfield and Cora Kirk have good chemistry with each other and their performances are good but not great in this film. They aren’t truly able to show off their talents due to a weak story.

Daniel Mays is one of the few supporting actors who makes the most of what little he is given and his character offers up a lot of comic relief.

The rest of the cast just sort of exists with little to do apart from a significant moment here and there.

Positives

The location is beautiful and many of the shots out on the Alps are magical. Even the two hotels have distinct looks that add some character to the film.

Negatives

The story is quite unoriginal and falls short on many aspects. There are no significant subplots to beef up the run time and the effort put into the narrative appears halfhearted.

The conflict between Hayley and James hinges on simple communication and that is a story beat that has been used time and time again. There is nothing new or special incorporated here to make it stand out.

Even the mix-up lasts for a single day and the contrasting fortunes aren’t effectively explored apart from one testy moment between James and Klaus the Ram.

There is an extensive cast that hasn’t been utilized properly and mostly exists to fill up space.

Verdict

Your Christmas or Mine 2 is a holiday rom-com that mirrors the basic plot of several other films within this specific sub-genre. This week itself there was another film about varying worlds or cultures colliding in a relationship against a snowy Christmas backdrop which tells you how common the narrative is.
