The Grimm Variations review: Fantastic interpretations of beloved fables

The Grimm Variations is an anthology series based on the Brothers Grimm fairy tales but with a twist. The series is streaming on Netflix.

Story

Charlotte loved listening to the stories told by her older brothers, Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm.

Her vivid imagination allows her to perceive these stories through different lenses while still maintaining their original narratives.

She listens to the fairy tales of Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, The Town Musicians of Bremen, and others.

These tales have important lessons about humanity within them and they are imparted to Charlotte by her brothers.

Positives

This is not the first time the fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm have been retold but this is one of the more impressive attempts.

The storytelling is very mature and gives the tales an added dimension that is sure to affect audiences of all ages.

The art style compliments the content perfectly and the aesthetic shifts in each story provide some variety and flair.

Another facet of the series that is exceptional is the soundtrack as it employs strictly classical compositions. Some of them are covered in different genres too.

Negatives

There are moments in some stories where the base concept isn’t established properly and yet the story chugs along leaving little time for comprehension.

Verdict

The Grimm Variations picks out six fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm and retells them with exciting twists that still have the essence of the original fables and widen their reach.

The OST makes clever use of classical music and the themes incorporated are varied and thought-provoking.
