Night Nurse: Dead Boy Detectives character explained

Night Nurse is one of the major supporting characters in Dead Boy Detectives, giving the protagonists a hard time constantly while navigation quite a challenging spell at her job herself. Ruth Connell plays the character.

The Night Nurse runs the Lost & Found department in the afterlife.

She works for Death’s bureaucracy and so she abides by all the rules and machinations of a general bureaucracy, only it’s more surreal and absurd since this bureaucratic machinery operates in a different plane of existence.

Powers & quirks

Night Nurse is a trans-dimensional being who can’t be killed. She is very powerful and wields a variety of powers, from manipulating time and space to even opening doors to hell.

She is extremely finicky about the punctuality and the proper functioning of her department.

When she learns that two slimy ghosts have been evading their radar for quite some time, she sets out to find Charles and Edwin herself.

The job role & challenges

Her job entails finding errant boy ghosts and placing them in the afterlife that awaits them. Charles and Edwin are two such lost souls she needs to place in the afterlife.

However, those two want anything but an afterlife. When Night Nurse uses force, Charles retaliates and kicks her off a cliff, and down she goes inside the mouth of a sea monster.

She spends some time in the company of an absurdly calm adventurer inside the monster’s belly, who helps her get out of the beast’s stomach.

She again surprises the dead boy detectives, determined to take them with her this time.

A stickler for due process

However, when they point out how Edwin had to spend so much time in hell because of a technical error, she halts. She is very particular and serious about the efficiency of the bureaucratic process.

She also agrees to delay the boys’ journey to the afterlife when Niko points out that she needs a certain permission to do so. Later, she visits the boys with her supervisor.

The supervisor sees the boys and their case files, about so many difficult cases of missing souls that they helped move to the afterlife.

Seeing that, the supervisor decides to let the boys continue to carry on their profession in the land of the living.

She also leaves Night Nurse as their chaperone. To much of her chagrin, Night Nurse has to become a part of the Dead Boy Detectives Agency. Season 2 forward, she is sure to be a great addition to the agency.
