Noise (2023) review: A moving tale of loss

In ‘Noise’ or ‘Ruido’, a mother searches for her missing daughter but faces resistance from the authorities. She eventually uncovers how corruption rules the land. The Mexican social drama film is now streaming on Netflix.

Story

Julia (Julieta Egurrola) has been searching for her daughter, Ger, ever since she went missing during a trip with her friends to celebrate her graduation.

Hearing her story, Abril (Teresa Ruiz), a journalist investigating cases of missing people in Mexico, decides to help her in the search.

As Julia desperately tries to find any information, she realises that the government is involved in covering up the incidents as well.

When Julia and Abril threaten to get too close to the truth, they become the target of dangerous people from the world of crime as well as official authorities.

Will Julia ever find out what happened to Ger? Or will she also fall prey to the evils of corruption and crime?

Performances

Egurrola is excellent as the protagonist, Julia. This isn’t a film filled with different characters. Almost all of it revolves around Julia and her experiences, and the actress does justice to the character.

The only one with screen time apart from her is Ruiz, and she ably supports the lead actress.

Positives

The narrative expertly comments on different social issues prevalent in Mexican society, all the while focussing on the search for Ger.

From highlighting the kidnapping of women for human trafficking to the dark underbelly of the city, ‘Noise’ captures a lot. And all this is done with nuance. None of it seems forced or inauthentic. Director Natalia Beristain handles delicate topics extremely well.

The film gradually divulges the details regarding the disappearance of Ger, and keeps your interest piqued throughout.

Additionally, Noise is a heart-rending movie that is bound to move the viewers. The plight of Julia, as well as others who have lost someone close to them, is tragic, and the portrayal is praiseworthy.

Negatives

The film has some pacing issues. It drags at times and the total duration could have been shorter. There is not enough for a runtime of one hour and forty minutes.

Verdict

Noise is a well-crafted film that tackles relevant issues successfully along with keeping you engaged through most of it. One of the better social issue dramas on the streamer.
