Dawn Reeve: Them: The Scare character explained

Detective Dawn Reeve is the protagonist of Them: The Scare. She investigates a series of strange murders that eventually connect to her past. Deborah Ayorinde plays Dawn.

Dawn Reeve lives with her son, Kelvin “Kel” Reeve, and her mother, Athena, who works at a toy store.

Dawn and her husband, Corey, are not together anymore, but Corey still drops by to meet Kel from time to time.

As an LAPD detective, Dawn is a hard worker; most importantly, she works smart. Even though she has had her fair share of drawbacks, her lieutenant trusts her.

Dawn is stuck with McKinney when she is investigating Bernice Mott’s case. Regularly, she has to deal with his atrocities, keep her head calm, and get to the bottom of the case, when all McKinney wants to do is rush and close the case as soon as he can.

Dawn’s deeper connection to the case

While Dawn is invested in solving the case at hand, she is unaware that the entity responsible for these murders is haunting her home too.

Athena and Kel both sense it, but it’s Athena who recognizes it. Athena sees Dawn taking prescribed medications for a heart condition that her father had.

Athena lets Dawn know that she doesn’t have that condition because her father is not her biological father; she is adopted.

However, Athena doesn’t tell Dawn the whole truth until the end, when the entity starts targeting Kel.

It is revealed that the spirit haunting them is that of Edmund Gaines, Dawn’s twin brother. Athena and her husband, William, adopted both Edmund and Dawn as kids from Bernice Mott’s foster home.

While Athena loved Dawn, she was forced to send Edmund back to the foster home because he was stubborn and would throw tantrums. He was quite difficult to handle.

It is when Athena comes back home to find William dead and Edmund playing with his father’s medications that she makes this decision.

Dawn and Edmund’s bond

Athena confesses that Dawn and Edmund were inseparable. Edmund would scream out loud if Dawn left the room.

So it was hard for her to handle Dawn after sending Edmund back. Hence, Athena made Dawn believe that Edmund was her imaginary friend to calm her down.

Following their separation, Dawn went on to live a near-perfect life, whereas Edmund continued to face rejection after rejection in his life, from his adoptive family, his friends, and even in his career.

Dawn warns Edmund not to visit her neighborhood again

Edmund found his sister, Dawn, later in his life, but after seeing how much she has progressed, is happy, and doesn’t remember him, he is not able to tell her who he is.

Even Dawn warns him not to visit her neighborhood again after observing his suspicious behavior.

Edmund eventually ends up murdering a person and giving himself up to a demon by killing himself. Edmund, as a violent spirit, now haunts Dawn and her family.

Dawn’s fate

During the investigation into the case at hand, Dawn fails to save a little boy who is killed by Edmund, resulting in her getting detained.

Dawn eventually figures out that Edmund is attempting to talk to her through the murders he has committed; he is sharing his story with her.

Edmund attempts to convince Dawn to give herself up to the entity haunting them too, but Dawn expresses her love for Edmund, which results in the entity perishing and Edmund losing.

Dawn lost her mother, Athena, but she was able to save her son. Following the whole debacle, Dawn is offered a desk job at the end of the series when she brings McKinney’s crimes to light, but she rejects it.

In the final moments of the series, Dawn discovers a photograph of the Emory family. That photograph welcomes Da Tap Dance Man into her house, hinting that Dawn may have to deal with another ghost again.
