Full Circle (2023) review: Brilliant casting doesn’t improve elaborate drama

Full Circle is a drama mini-series that starts off with a botched kidnapping that unearths many secrets and intertwines several individuals. The series is available on Max.

Story

Savitri Mahabir believes that her family is cursed after her brother-in-law is killed. She receives instructions from a shaman to kidnap a boy from a well-known family in New York.

Her people end up getting the wrong kid but the whole situation opens up a can of worms as everyone involved appears to have secrets that they have been hiding.

As the efforts to carry out the ritual properly are made, the authorities investigate all angles and find out things about people’s pasts that have indirectly led to this moment.

Performances

This series has a fantastic ensemble cast that gives in their best efforts to ensure the drama feels genuine and engaging but is let down by other aspects out of their control.

Claire Danes and Timothy Olyphant play Sam and Derek, the worried parents who have things to hide. They work well together as a couple on screen that is going through a rough patch.

Zazie Beetz plays Mel Harmony, a pushy inspector with BPD that affects her ability to do her job appropriately. She comes across as aggravating on multiple occasions.

Gerald Jones and Sheyi Cole are quite impressive as Louis and Xavier, two characters with a lot of responsibility that Jones and Cole do not shirk away from.

Positives

The cinematography adds to the intensity and employs some impressive techniques. The way certain shots are captured and the roving camera following characters around is amazing.

The score is another technical aspect of the series that lends itself to the genre wholeheartedly and succeeds in building up the emotion at any given moment.

Negatives

The story is poorly written and feels too intricate at times. The information is revealed in bits and pieces and doesn’t effectively create an intriguing narrative.

The scene transitions are abrupt and off-putting as they cut away to the next set piece without letting things settle down and occasionally the audio is running and the video is supposed to be connected but doesn’t feel coherent.

Verdict

Full Circle has a lot of high profile names attached to the project but unfortunately it doesn’t live up to the talent that is on display as the six episodes are a slog to get through and the mystery isn’t exciting enough to truly hook viewers.
