Family Switch review: Forgettable comedy-drama can still be enjoyed

In Family Switch, a rare cosmic event results in a family switching bodies with each other and finding their lives in shambles. The movie is now streaming on Netflix.

Story

It’s Christmas in three days, and the Walker family, especially the kids, are not exactly in the Christmas spirit. The family hasn’t been getting along for a while now. Wyatt and CC think that their parents, Jess and Bill, want them to be just like them.

Anyhow, Bill and Jess are not giving up on making this holiday memorable. To click a cute holiday picture of the family, the Walkers go to a planetarium to see quintuple planetary alignment, a rare cosmic event.

There, they again end up arguing and challenging each other to switch places for one day. The planetary alignment triggers a bright light that hits the family.

The next day, they wake up to find themselves in each other’s bodies. With each one of them having an important event coming up, the question remains: will they be able to go back to their original bodies or will they have to live like this forever?

Performances

The talented cast playing the Walkers is successful in portraying a dysfunctional family and the way their characters deal with the chaos that dawns upon them. However, one will only remember the cast and not the characters.

The cast can make viewers laugh, but they fail to stand out when their characters switch bodies. A viewer will constantly forget that they are in someone else’s body, as the behavior portrayed by the actors doesn’t put forth that much of a difference.

The behavior is only visible during the most intimate moments when the family is having a conversation with each other. Other than that, during the adventure they are on, it is a miss.

Positives

Family Switch first properly introduces the characters and their conflicts. Even that part of the ride is entertaining, as it is filled with some amusing moments that distinguish the characters and help establish what kind of film the viewer will be watching.

All the characters from the Walker family are quite relatable and different. The film certainly has those qualities that will bring a family together for a holiday watch.

The body swap genre is always refreshing and exciting. Family Switch, though predictable, hits with some heartwarming moments, whereas some instances are downright hilarious.

One knows that it’s not that funny, but they won’t mind enjoying the film. It is somewhat entertaining, if not a lot.

Negatives

Towards the end, Family Switch crams a lot of things; there is a rock performance and an adventurous car ride, both taking a lot of screen time. Also, instead of answering the questions around the mystic element, it revisits scenarios that should have been done in one go.

The body swap element in the film sees creators making some bold choices, and the film welcomes some really awkward moments. The film is also filled with many familiar faces, but none of them really get a chance to leave an impression, as the focus remains on the Walkers.

Verdict

Family Switch is the kind of film that will attract viewers with its star-studded cast, and the actors here deliver. The film is forgettable, but it’s not completely bland.
