Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix review: Thrilling series with many great elements

Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix is an animated series set in a dystopian future where a group of rebels are sent out on covert operations or face their deaths. The series is streaming on Netflix.

Story

The United States has crumbled, replaced by a technocracy led by the corporate entity known as Eden, with an iron grip on every aspect of society. Widespread poverty, discrimination, and inequality plague the nation, as Eden’s sole focus remains on maximizing its profits.

Dolph Laserhawk, a former cyborg military operative, has forsaken allegiance to any cause but his own self-sustenance. Together with his partner, Alex Taylor, their plan is to pilfer something of great value that promises a life of comfort and luxury.

Yet, when Alex’s betrayal throws Dolph into a different struggle, he finds himself uniting with a disparate group of rebels. Together, they embark on covert missions, and the tides of destiny set them on a collision course with the formidable Eden corporation.

Positives

The animation is crisp and dynamic. The retro gaming-inspired sequences are a blast to watch because of their vivid quality and the nostalgia factor.

Franchise universes are all the rage right now and they can often scan as capitalistic cash grabs, but this series incorporates the Ubisoft properties deftly within its narrative and isn’t too obnoxious about it.

All the characters are wonderful, but Bullfrog truly takes the cake. A frog assassin is already an incredible image, and Balak truly brings it to life with his performance. Watching Bullfrog do the ‘Leap of Faith’ is also a wonderful moment.

The narrative is skillfully crafted, delivering its unexpected twists and turns with precision. It tantalizingly maintains a gripping allure that keeps viewers fully engaged.

Negatives

There is an issue with the pacing due to the fact that the series is only 6 episodes. The first three episodes rush through, before things slow down for the next two, causing a bit of an imbalance.

This issue doesn’t allow the audience to properly connect with some of the characters and undermines some truly emotional moments early on.

Verdict

Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix is a refreshing video-game-inspired series that has enough of an identity to be considered distinct. There are intriguing characters, fantastic visuals, and a captivating story across 6 entertaining episodes. Audiences who enjoy the series will be clamoring for the second season already, such is the quality of the narrative.
