All the Places review: Feel-good film is a satisfying journey

In All the Places or A todas partes, two estranged siblings undertake a road trip they had planned decades ago, getting closer in the process. The Mexican comedy-drama film is now streaming on Netflix.

Story

Gabriela ‘Gabo’ (Ana Serradilla) and Fernando Medina (Mauricio Ochmann) are two siblings who meet after years at their father’s funeral, who was always hard on them.

After their mother’s death, he became even harsher. Fernando decided to leave the family and take up a job in Singapore, while Gabo stayed.

The pair have been estranged for years. Upon reuniting, they find a childhood pact of going on a road trip when they turn 18. Although they are decades late, Fernando convinces Gabo to take on this journey on their old bikes.

On the trip, the two gain unique experiences and learn important details about each other that change their relationship forever. Will they face their insecurities and make the right decisions they have always been afraid of?

Performances

Both Serradilla and Ochmann shine in this relatable tale of estranged siblings. The narrative is centred on their characters, and they hold your attention throughout.

Right from their banter to the complex emotional moments, both actors are excellent.

Positives

The narrative is solid and feels authentic. The two siblings warming up together isn’t thrown at the face of the viewers. It happens gradually and with reason.

Any siblings would be able to relate to some or the other part of their relationship. You are bound to see yourselves in some aspects of the characters.

Throughout its runtime, the film doesn’t fail to entertain, whether it be through humourous moments or crucial revelations.

By the end of All the Place, you will feel a sense of having accompanied the two protagonists on their journey, which is perhaps its greatest achievement.

And through the journey, you will understand precisely how Gabo and Fernando end up growing as people. The payoff is absolutely worth it.

Negatives

The siblings’ past is an extremely intriguing element but only addressed through pictures and statements.

If the film managed to add flashbacks, it would greatly add to the depth of the main characters and help the viewers understand them better.

Verdict

All the Places is a worthy watch if you’re into stories about estranged siblings. The road-trip aspect works as well. It’s one of the better films on Netflix.
