Gen V season 1 episode 5 recap & review: Welcome to the Monster Club

In episode 5 of Gen V, Andre, Cate, Emma, Jordan, and Marie experience gaps in their memory and try to figure out what they forgot. The episode is streaming on Prime Video.

Recap

Andre and Cate wake up in someone else’s house where an insane party seems to have occurred, but they have no memory of it. They walk in on Jordan and Marie in another room and rush back out.

Marie finds a giant Emma passed out naked in the pool and wakes her up. Jordan tells Andre and Cate they’re missing days from their memory, not just the previous night.

Emma and Marie look at videos of the party on social media and how giant Emma was a huge hit. Sam sneaks up on them and is grateful that they’re alright. However, they don’t seem to remember them and he realizes that their memories have been wiped.

Emma heads back to the dorm while Marie meets with the others, and they discuss why they cannot remember anything from the past few days. They deduce that it could have been Rufus to get revenge on Marie for what she did.

Cate says that he assaulted her in freshman year as well but she couldn’t do anything about it. Andre rushes out to get revenge on Rufus. Dr. Cardosa tells Indira that he doesn’t want to put his family in danger anymore but she says he has no choice.

He asks for Marie since her powers are incredibly rare and would help him grow closer to creating a means of controlling supes but Indira says that Marie has a benefactor so she is off limits.

Jordan tells Marie they don’t need to talk about what happened between them since they have no memory of what they did. They walk around campus looking for Rufus and find him talking to Indira.

They run after him but he manages to lose them. He goes back to his room and finds Andre waiting for him. However, before Andre can do anything, Rufus wipes his mind and Andre regains consciousness at the line of a fast food joint.

Marie goes back to her room and meets Emma who is excited because she broke into the top 100 supes of the university. She and Marie discuss Marie’s feelings for Jordan until Emma finds a t-shirt from the drive-in that Sam took her to.

Sam is hiding somewhere when he hears the voices in his head telling him that he wasn’t able to save Emma. Then a squad of soldiers drop down and Sam brutally murders them before walking away.

Marie feels a clot in her shoulder and when she uses her powers to unravel it, she pulls a tracker out of her shoulder. She rushes to Cate’s room to show her and Cate asks Marie to check her, but Cate removes her gloves and apologizes to Marie before wiping her mind.

Jordan runs into Marie in the hallway and notices that her memory has been wiped once again. They go looking for Rufus while Cate goes to Indira’s office to tell her that she can’t keep betraying her friends anymore.

Emma finds Sam at the drive-in and she says that even though she doesn’t remember him, she feels like she can trust him. Sam says that “she” made Luke forget him as well, and this makes her curious.

Jordan and Marie find where Rufus is hiding and send a message to Andre who is with Cate. They are just about to hurt Rufus when Emma calls Marie and tells her that Cate is the one who wiped their memories.

Andre walks in just after and is about to kill Rufus but Marie and Jordan stop him. They tell Andre the truth and Cate walks in and apologizes before restoring Andre’s memories. He is brought to tears and walks away after calling Cate a monster.

Review

  • A lot of questions were raised in the previous episode with the abrupt cut right at the end, and this was quite the way to explain that. It’s very clever to make it seem like a mistake only for it to be revealed as intentional all along.
  • There have been some truly insane set-pieces within the universe, and now you can add a muppet massacre to that list. Watching Sam deal with the soldiers in such a gory fashion even in muppet form is surreal.
  • Cate’s reveal as the one who was betraying everyone comes as a genuine surprise and lands perfectly. There were moments early on that might have raised doubts, but it was still a well kept secret uncovered at the right moment.
