Steve Blackman on The Umbrella Academy 4: “The stakes have never been greater”

The Umbrella Academy showrunner Steve Blackman has teased that in season 4, the Hargreeves will face stakes that are higher than ever before.

At the end of season 3, the Hargreeves found themselves stuck in a universe that is being dictated by Reginald Hargreeves. They also realised they had lost all their powers.

In an interview on the Netflix editorial platform Tudum, Blackman said: “There are new enemies who want to see them wiped out of existence, but how do they manage without their powers? Is there even a way to get them back? The stakes have never been greater.”

He added that Reginald was not able to entirely reprogram the universe thanks to Allison killing him before he had the chance.

Talking about the post-credits scene featuring Ben Hargreeves, Blackman stated that it is a pivotal moment in the grand scheme of things.

“Let’s be clear — that is Sparrow Ben. The question you should really be asking yourself is what the fuck is he doing on a Korean subway train reading a book about pottery? Odd, right? Of course, it is!”

“This is the Umbrella Academy. As every good Umbrella fan knows, no moment in the show exists in isolation. Everything we see has meaning. And this moment is no exception. Ben has a reason to be there… but you’ll have to wait until Season 4 to understand why,” he said.

Netflix recently announced that season 4 will be the final part of the series, pulling the curtain on what started when the siblings found Reginald had been killed back in the first season.
