Netflix has released the trailer of Pieces of a Woman, an intense drama which will be available for streaming on the platform from January 7, 2021.
But first, it will be released in select theatres on December 30, 2020, before premiering on Netflix for the global audience.
The film stars Vanessa Kirby, Shia LaBeouf, and Ellen Burstyn, apart from Molly Parker, Sarah Snook, Iliza Shlesinger, Benny Safdie, Jimmie Fails, and Domenic Di Rosa.
Helmed by the award-winning director Kornél Mundruczó (White God), Pieces of a Woman revolves around an expectant couple from Boston, Martha and Sean Carson (portrayed by Kirby and LaBeouf, respectively).
Their lives change for the worse when during a home birth, they lose their daughter at the hands of a flustered midwife. From there starts a year-long journey for Martha as she attempts to come to terms with her grief.
The trailer of Pieces of a Woman opens on a happy scene where the Carson couple is shown anticipating the birth of their daughter, with the scene quickly morphing into one of pain and tragedy and lifelong grief.
But before that grief can even settle in, comes the daunting task of getting justice for all that they lost. Especially when most cases of home births gone wrong usually have “satisfactory explanations”, while for others there are seemingly no medical answers for.
The only thing left to be heard is: “We’re so sorry for your loss.”
With the couple’s relationship growing estranged, and her mother trying to regulate her life, Martha has to find the courage to face the midwife in court. And in between all that, allow herself to grieve the daughter she lost.
The film is a moving, emotional journey of a woman who tries to set aside what everyone thinks and discovers herself in the process.
Pieces of a Woman won the Premio Arca Cinema Giovani (Young Cinema) Award at the 2020 Venice International Film Festival. It won Kirby the Volpi Cup for Best Actress for her outstanding performance.
Written by Kata Wéber (White God), Mundruczó adapted her stage play of the same name, which premiered in December 2018. It was performed on stage by the artistic ensemble of the TR Warszawa, a Polish theatre.
Martin Scorsese served as an executive producer of the film.
Kirby is best known for her portrayal of Princess Margaret in the Netflix series, The Crown.
