Baek Cheol-gyu joins the District Prosecutors’ Office as a senior intern, harboring an ulterior motive. In Miss Night and Day, Jung Jae-sung plays Baek Cheol-gyu.
The former director of Hwadong Medical Center, Baek Cheol-gyu, takes Ko Na-heun’s place as a senior public intern at the Seohan District Prosecutors’ Office after Ko Na-heun’s death.
Director Baek is a reputed man who selflessly helps those in need. The people of the community respect him for providing free treatment to those who cannot afford it.
While some see him as a charitable man, others accuse him of killing his wife in the past. Apart from the rumors and the public image he has created, no one knows much about this enigmatic man.
The murder of Director Baek’s wife
About twenty years ago, Director Baek’s wife went missing. He did not immediately report the disappearance, as his wife often left without informing him.
The private detective Director Baek hired to find his wife informed him that she was having an affair and frequented a motel with her lover.
Desperate to find his wife, Director Baek visited Mi-jin’s aunt, Lim Sun, who was a bank employee. He trusted her and requested that she call him if his wife ever withdrew money from her account.
Soon after, Director Baek’s wife’s body was found in a motel. Fentanyl was discovered in her blood, and Director Baek, who had easy access to the drug, was suspected of killing her for cheating on him.
He was arrested and interrogated by the police. However, Director Baek had a solid alibi. With no hard evidence against him and given his reputable status, the police released him.
Lim Sun had tried to contact him while he was in custody, but by the time he was released, she had also disappeared.
Director Baek’s private investigator was unable to find her. He suspected Lim Sun of murdering Director Baek’s wife or being involved in her murder.
Director Baek then asked the investigator to keep searching for Lim Sun, believing that she was the only person who knew the truth about his wife’s murder.
After his wife’s death, Director Baek started drinking and could no longer perform surgeries. He blamed Lim Sun for the loss of his wife, his career, and his reputation.
Lim Sun’s return
After Mi-jin assumes her aunt’s identity, Director Baek’s investigator, who is still looking for Lim Sun, informs him of her return.
Director Baek’s private investigator keeps an eye on Lim Sun, unaware that Mi-jin and Lim Sun are the same person.
Director Baek wants to question Lim Sun. To do that, he needs to bring her to his hospital, so he pays someone to attack her.
Mi-jin fends off the attacker, who later dies in prison, and it is assumed that the attack was meant for Ko Won. No one realizes that the attack was intended for Lim Sun.
Director Baek then takes matters into his own hands and starts working at the District Prosecutors’ Office to keep an eye on Lim Sun.
Ji-ung and Mi-jin eventually start suspecting him of killing Ko Na-heun. As a result, he stops coming to work. Finally, when they obtain a search warrant for his hospital, Director Baek seizes the opportunity to kidnap Lim Sun.
He keeps her hostage in the storage room and questions her about his wife. He plans to drug her to make her confess, but Ji-ung rescues her in time.
Director Baek is arrested for kidnapping Mi-jin, which surprises him because he had kidnapped Lim Sun. As he refuses to talk to the authorities, Mi-jin decides to speak with him.
She tells him about her curse and how she assumed her aunt’s identity. Mi-jin asks for his help in finding the person she believes not only murdered his wife but also her aunt.
Director Baek must now decide whether he is willing to believe Mi-jin. His help might enable Ji-ung and Mi-jin to catch the killer, whose next target seems to be Mi-jin.
