Carmen Gutiérrez is Griselda’s friend who escaped the drug business in Colombia and moved to the US.
After killing Alberto, Griselda contacts Carmen in Miami and asks if she can she can stay with her for a while till she gets back on her feet.
Carmen welcomes her friend with open arms and offers any assistance that Griselda might need.
Carmen owns a travel agency after spending years as a flight attendant and she lets Griselda work with her to earn some money.
When she finds out that Griselda is selling drugs, she kicks her out because she doesn’t want to be involved in that life anymore.
It pulls you back in
To smuggle drugs into Miami, Griselda contacts an old friend from a brothel in Colombia and buys the contract of many of the girls there.
She has Chucho buy the tickets from Carmen’s agency, and she realizes what Griselda is up to.
Griselda says she wants to help her friend by giving her all that business and Carmen eventually agrees.
Carmen moves on up in life but it catches up to her when CENTAC finds one of the stash houses rented under her company’s name.
They offer her a deal and after Griselda almost kills Carmen in her paranoia, Carmen goes back to become a witness.
Creative liberties
Griselda did have a friend named Maria Gutiérrez who served as her travel agent and later became a DEA informant.
She also had someone named Carmen Cabán who served as one of Grislda’s traffickers and shares many similarities with Carmen’s character.
Cabán also testified against Griselda after being arrested in 1973.
