What is Opulentia in Strong Girl Nam-Soon?

Strong Girl Nam-Soon sees the titular girl and her mother wage a war on drugs in South Korea. Aiding them in their battle is a mysterious organization called Opulentia.

Hwang Geum-Ju got her wealth because of her Midas touch and her talents in doubling the money. She has an empire of wealth and despite a lack of higher education, she is an emotionally intelligent person, unlike most others.

When she learns about a highly potent drug making rounds in her vicinity and targeting vulnerable people all over the country, she decides to put her wealth to good use and wage a war on this drug crisis.

Her path ahead is difficult, to say the least, and her mission puts an instant target on her back. Her enemy is formidable, both in terms of raw power (like her superhuman strength), and in terms of wealth.

That’s where Opulentia arrives as her partner. It’s a mysterious organization that works for the welfare of society from the shadows, going after corrupt and greedy individuals and organizations.

Origins, hierarchy & philosophy

The first person from Opulentia that the audience sees in Strong Girl Nam-Soon is Daniel. He is an active member of the organization who helps Geum-Ju tremendously throughout her battle with Ryu Si-O and his drug trafficking business.

He later takes her to meet the vice-chairman of the organization — McGovern. He is an old white man who runs a modest food truck by the side of the ocean, which surprises Geum-Ju.

McGovern tells her that it was her great-great-grandmother who founded Opulentia after earning a lot of money in the fish market. He says she did it because she wanted to build a better world.

In the present day, McGovern’s older sister runs the family business and is also the chairman of Opulentia.

He reveals his and the organization’s philosophy, which he states is to not lead a lavish life but one that’s all about eating good food with good people, and using whatever money that’s left to do good deeds.

That’s not all, because the main objective is to punish those who use money to do bad deeds.

Modus Operandi

In episode 5 of Strong Girl Nam-Soon, Daniel explains to Geum-Ju how Opulentia operates. The organization benefits from top-secret information.

To accrue such information, they have summoned retired agents from the CIA, FBI, the Russian Special Services, the MI6, and all sorts of powerful organizations, both lawful and unlawful.

Additionally, they look for people who allocate their money towards the right cause so that they can have them join the team and fight the good fight together.

After running a background check on Geum-Ju and meeting her, they join her in the fight against Ryu Si-O and the international criminal organization called Pavel.
