Plot summary

When Jess and Hannah were kids, they sneaked into a prom and made a pact with each other to be with the love of their lives on their prom night.

Jess plans to be the prom queen, the most popular girl in the school, no matter what it takes.

Years later, now in high school, Jess is still obsessed with becoming the prom queen. Hannah, on the other hand, is just tagging along because Jess is her best friend and they made a pact.

Jess is dating soccer team captain Luca, while Hannah is with Greg, who is madly in love with Hannah.

However, Hannah is a lesbian who has not dared to come out. Hence, she has been pretending to like Greg.

When it comes to Jess, Luca doesn’t treat her right, but she still wants to be with someone who has a reputation at high school.

Jess finds Luca cheating on her, while Hannah learns that Greg plans to stick with her after high school. He has switched colleges just to be close to her.

An overwhelmed Hannah walks out on Greg, suggesting that she is breaking up with him. Hannah comes out in front of her best friend, Jess, who knew Hannah was gay all along.

Tomorrow is prom, and both Jess and Hannah have lost their dates. Hannah no longer wants to go, but Jess has waited a lot for this night.

Jess convinces Hannah to not give up by making her dream about getting intimate with the girl of her dreams.

When they fail to find someone from high school, the two attend a party for college students as well as a party of frat boys.

During both parties, they come close to finding dates. One thing or the other ruins everything. They go from getting involved with a killer to a stripper.

After having such a rough night, Hannah decides to go back home. Jess is still adamant about finding a date for the prom.

So far, Hannah has kept tagging along, only because of Jess. She has had enough, and she plans to go home after grabbing the keys from her brother, Jacob, who is at a concert.

Ending explained:

Hannah and Jess fall apart

Hannah calls her brother Jacob. Afraid that Hannah is going to find out about her secret, Jess snatches Hannah’s phone and throws it into the water.

Jess confesses that she hooked up with Jacob when they visited him once. Jess and Jacob had been keeping this from Hannah all along.

After everything Hannah has done for Jess, Hannah realizes that Jess is a horrible friend. Both of them end up in an argument, with Hannah pointing out that prom night is the only thing that Jess cares about.

At a time when they are arguing, Luca calls Jess. He has been trying to mend things between them. After watching her best friend prioritize picking up Luca’s call over finishing their discussion, Hannah walks out on Jess.

Greg learns the truth

Hannah goes to the concert Jacob is at. Jess follows up too. Unexpectedly, Hannah crosses paths with Angie Adams there. Angie has been Hannah’s crush.

Angie hears about Hannah’s rough night and finds Hannah cool. The two get along. Meanwhile, Jacob has come to the concert with Greg.

The moment Greg finds out that Hannah is around, he goes looking for her and finds her making out with Angie. Greg is heartbroken to learn that their relationship was a lie.

Angie, on the other hand, is disappointed to find out that Hannah has been pretending to date Greg and lying.

Hannah follows Angie outside to see Luca punching her brother, Jacob. Jess is around. Hannah and Jess end up in an argument again.

Both point out how desperate they are—Jess for a prom date and Hannah to get laid. Hannah reminds Jess how she has treated her, and Jess doesn’t back off to tell Hannah that she treated Greg the same way.

Following their fallout, Hannah is visited by Greg the next day. Greg confesses that he is not mad at Hannah because she is gay; he is mad because she pretended to be in love with him.

Greg felt like she was using him. If she had only told him that she was afraid to come out, he would have pretended to be her boyfriend, and if she didn’t have the guts to tell him, then she should have just dumped him. He least expected her to be a decent friend.

Greg lets Hannah know that he is once again switching colleges. Hannah doesn’t have to face him anymore.

Jess and Jacob’s fate

Meanwhile, at the prom, Jess feels lonely without her best friend, leading her to steal Luca’s car to find Hannah.

Jess comes to Hannah’s, only for Hannah to not be there. However, she does find Jacob. The two confess their feelings for each other, but Jess has come to understand that she needs to focus on herself and make sure that she is dating for the right reasons.

Jess lets Jacob know that he will be the first person she calls when she is ready to date again. The two kiss. Upon learning that Hannah is at the prom, Jess immediately leaves.

Jess and Hannah reconcile

Jess comes to prom to find Hannah coming out and apologizing to Greg in front of everyone with a grand gesture.

In turn, Hannah sees Jess punching Luca when he disrespects her best friend. The prom ends with both Hannah and Jess not finding the love of their lives.

Hannah does approach Angie, but Angie thinks that Hannah has just come out and is still sorting out her identity. Hannah agrees. She takes the rejection warmly, and the two decide to be friends.

Hannah and Jess embrace each other and watch Greg find someone who is perfect for him. Hannah and Jess later spend the night together playing music.
