In American Rust: Broken Justice, launching a secret investigation against a powerful company sees Lee English lose her life.
In the second season of American Rust, Lee works as a paralegal at a firm that represents Landwill Energy, a powerful and shady firm.
Lee closely follows the case against Landwill, in which a couple accuses the company of spoiling their locality’s water, which was once pure.
Lee launches a secret investigation into the matter and comes to find out that the couple isn’t lying. The tests are there, and Landwill is hiding them.
Lee hands a copy of one of those tests to the couple so that they can use them against Landwill. However, she requests that they not mention that they got them from her.
Lee dodges the bullet, but not for long, as Landwill’s fixer is hunting down the people investigating them.
Events that lead to Lee’s death
Lee doesn’t stop right there and sends more such freshwater reports to others. Eventually, she tracks down Nell McKenna, who used to own Allegheny Water Testing and is responsible for manipulating the water reports for Landwill Energy.
Nell was already being threatened by Landwill, and when Lee visits her, she assumes that she represents Landwill and that these people are not going to let her live no matter what she does for them. This results in Nell killing herself.
When Lee’s boss, Rinna, is accused of sharing these files and told that someone with access to their files can only be responsible, Rinna starts suspecting Lee.
Rinna looks into the files that Lee possesses and then contacts Landwill’s fixer, Russell, to settle things.
Del finds out that Lee can be the next target when he learns that she visited Nell once. Del asks Steve to go to Lee’s. Unfortunately, Steve is a bit late. Russell kills Lee the moment they meet again in the finale.
Lee’s death hits Del, Grace, Isaac, and especially Billy hard. Billy had plans to propose to Lee for marriage, and Lee even had said yes to building a life with him through a voicemail she left for Billy.
