Kathryn “Kathy” Shobana: Inspector Rishi character explained

While investigating a series of serial killings, Rishi falls in love with Kathy, unaware that she is keeping secrets. In Inspector Rishi, Sunaina Yella plays Kathy.

Kathy was a teacher in a government school before becoming a beat officer in 2019, when the government recruited female forest guards for the first time.

After Robert’s death, Kathy and a fellow officer, Selvi, spot Vanaratchi during night patrol duty. Unlike Selvi, Kathy keeps this sighting to herself, assuming that no one will believe her.

Selvi advises Kathy to quit her job, but Kathy has nowhere to go. She is an orphan who was raised in an orphanage.

Kathy chooses to stay and continue working in Thaenkaadu Forest. Sathya then assigns her to assist Rishi in his investigation.

Kathy and Rishi’s relationship

Kathy moves into the house assigned to Rishi and his team. She not only assists Rishi with the investigation but also helps him manage his frequent headaches.

As Kathy tries to understand Rishi, they grow closer and eventually develop feelings for each other.

Soon after, Kathy and another officer are attacked during night duty. Rishi manages to find and save Kathy in time.

This time, Kathy does not hesitate to disclose that it was Vanaratchi who attempted to kill her, hoping that Rishi, who also sees a ghost, will believe her.

In response, Rishi shares his past with Kathy. He tells her about his relationship with Viji to convince her that Vanaratchi is not real. With Kathy’s support, Rishi stops seeing Viji’s ghost.

Despite the danger, Kathy continues helping Rishi’s team, even aiding in the search for the poachers who kidnapped Sathya.

Eventually, Kathy confesses her feelings to Rishi, who reciprocates them, unaware of Kathy’s ulterior motive.

The betrayal

Anticipating an attack on the mine workers, Rishi and his team go to save them and catch the people behind the serial killings.

As Rishi suspected, the killers are among those people who had been working with his team, including Kathy and Sathya.

Kathy, Sathya, and the others are revealed to be the last survivors of the Kaanagar. They are children who escaped during the ritual that ended in mass suicide.

While the other survivors were adopted, Kathy was left behind in the orphanage. Four years before the killings started, Sathya reunited with the survivors.

They came up with a plan to protect the forest by killing those who harm it, instilling fear of Vanaratchi in everyone to deter similar threats in the future.

When Rishi started his investigation into the murders, Sathya assigned Kathy to keep an eye on him, which she did by pretending to fall in love with him.

Additionally, Kathy was never attacked by Vanaratchi; the group staged the attack to divert suspicion away from Mangai, who was arrested by the police.

Once Rishi finds out the truth, Kathy and the group try to kill him. However, Rishi’s decision not to reveal all of his plans to Kathy saves his life.

In the end, Kathy and the other members of the group, excluding Sathya, are arrested, with Kathy being taken into custody without saying goodbye to Rishi.
