Kai: Rebel Moon — Part One: A Child of Fire character explained

In Rebel Moon — Part One: A Child of Fire, Kai is a mercenary and a pilot who volunteers to join Kora on her quest. Charlie Hunnam plays Kai.

Kora and Gunnar meet Kai in the Port City of Providence, Veldt, during their search for Bloodaxes and General Titus.

Kai aids Kora and Gunnar in a fight. Kora assumes that he is a bounty hunter. However, Kai explains to her that he is an opportunist. He finds ways to steal or earn money one way or another.

He volunteers to help Kora go to Pollux, where she can find General Titus. Upon hearing that they are looking for soldiers to fight against the Motherworld, he claims that he knows people who will be useful to Kora.

Kai’s betrayal

Throughout his time with Kora, Kai shows that he is changing. He claims that he had honor once before becoming a thief. He holds Kora responsible for making him want to be an honorable man.

Kai says he is willing to fight alongside Kora and her soldiers, but first, he will sell the cargo he has on his ship and sever his ties to the life of a thief.

Kai and Kora talk about honor

Everything Kai says turns out to be a big lie. He sells Kora and the warriors he has helped her recruit to Admiral Noble because he knows he will be paid a hefty amount for their heads.

The very moment Kai heard Kora’s story in Providence, he had realized that he could round up all of these warriors with the help of her ideas of resistance.

Kai was sure that these warriors would jump at any chance to exact revenge on the realm. Hence, he banked on that opportunity and used Kora for his benefit.

Kai’s past and death

Even Kai is a victim of the Motherworld. The Motherworld didn’t just destroy his planet. They tortured every man, woman, and child on that planet.

They left them clinging to life as they turned them to ash from low orbit. The experience taught Kai to never step foot on the wrong side of history.

The honor Kai talked about was a lie too. Kai meets his end when he makes Gunnar kill Kora and her warriors one by one.

Instead of pulling the trigger on Kora, Gunnar plays smart, finds an opening, frees Kora, and kills Kai instead.
