Plot summary:

Mark Grayson is saved by the surviving Thraxans and nursed back to health. He helps them rebuild their city until Nuolzot says they’ve built a ship for him to return.

He says he isn’t done helping, but Andressa insists it is time for him to return home.

She also asks him to take his brother with him because she will die long before he even learns to talk.

Mark returns to Earth two months after he left, and he tells his mom everything. She agrees to take care of the child for the time being.

On his way to meet Amber, Cecil interrupts him and wants him to be debriefed. Mark says that Cecil listens in on his conversations anyway so he knows what’s going on.

Donald struggles to accept the fact that he’s a machine and confronts Cecil about it. Cecil tells him that it was his choice to have his memories wiped.

Allen the Alien wakes up from his stasis pod, stronger than ever before. He is welcomed by Thadeus, who admits that he gambled on Allen’s life by shutting down support.

He then reveals himself to be a Viltrumite rebel and asks Allen to bring Mark Grayson to help in the war against the Viltrumites.

Cecil wants to take Nolan’s other child in for research because they are better equipped to take care of him but Debbie makes it clear that he’s staying with them.

She also names the boy Oliver after Mark’s grandfather. Mark attempts to live a normal, balanced life but trouble is always around the corner.

He is called in to help the Guardians when a warship filled with sequids is headed to Earth. Shapesmith admits the truth about his origins and goes along to provide key information.

They barely make it out of there after freeing the real Rus Livingston from sequid control and head back to Earth. However, one sequid stows away inside Rus’ body and waits for its moment.

While they were out in space, Rex, Shrinking Rae, and Dupli-Kate stayed behind to hold the fort.

The Lizard League takes over a military base with nuclear missiles and holds them hostage until these three arrive.

They do their best to defeat the league but Kate dies and Rae and Rex come away with fatal injuries and are hospitalized.

Rick returns to college and William is thrilled to help him assimilate back to regular life. However, Rick still suffers from the trauma he went through.

He considers killing himself until William calls in Donald, who explains that he’s been through a similar situation of dying and being rebuilt.

The superhero life is hurting Mark’s relationship with Amber and he goes to Art for advice. Meanwhile, Amber visits Eve to talk about the same thing.

Both of them express their concerns but are unsure of what to do next. Mark also asks Art about his father’s books and is given a set of sci-fi novels written by Nolan.

Mark realizes that these are true stories about beings out in the galaxy that could hurt Viltrumites.

When Allen comes to Earth Immortal attacks him assuming he’s a threat. He is still dealing with the loss of Kate and is quick to anger.

Mark breaks up the fight before it gets serious and takes Allen to his dorm room to talk. He says that he cannot go to space right now but offers the information in the books for the time being.

Rudy wants to help Amanda with her curse but she isn’t thrilled with the way he refers to her like some kind of experiment.

Bulletproof expresses his concerns about the state of the Guardians after they suffered heavy losses in recent missions.

Immortal tells Cecil that he wants to retire because his head isn’t in the game anymore. Cecil says that he’s only willing to grant him a vacation so that he can recover.

One night while Mark and Amber are out to dinner, a Viltrumite named Annissa shows up and threatens to kill Amber unless Mark speaks with her.

She is there to remind Mark of his duties, but Mark remains defiant. Cecil informs him that a cruiseliner is in trouble nearby so Mark goes to save it with Annissa following.

She observes for a while before helping him out. Afterwards, she reiterates her message and Mark refuses to follow orders yet again.

They clash and she is much stronger and faster than Mark. He dares her to kill him but she holds back because that wasn’t her mission.

She returns to her ship to give General Kree an update but they are interrupted by an alert of a threat nearby.

Allen is flying past and Annissa goes out to face him. She mentions the prison and Allen realizes that this is his chance to go there, so he intentionally gets captured.

Mark gets a call from his mother, but Angstrom Levy is on the other end, holding his mother and brother hostage.

Ending explained:

A one-sided grudge

Mark rushes home and finds Angstrom in a precarious situation with his mother and Oliver. Angstrom threatens to hurt them unless Mark stands down.

He then provokes Mark and explains how it was Mark’s fault that he turned out that way. Mark tries to reason with Angstrom, reminding him that Angstrom caused the explosion.

Angstrom speaks about how in every other universe, Mark took his father’s side and turned evil, but here he’s the anomaly.

He keeps provoking Mark until he is rushed. At that moment, he sends Mark into another dimension.

He keeps doing this to tire Mark out, but then to kick him when he’s down, he breaks Debbie’s arm.

Mark has enough and moves quickly enough to land a punch on Angstrom. Angstrom has enhanced his body so that he can land the killing blow himself.

However, he isn’t strong enough and Mark ends up killing Angstrom in anger.

Orchestrating a jailbreak

Nolan is being trained back to his full strength so that he can face his execution according to Viltrumite tradition.

Allen shows up and telepathically tells him about meeting Mark and everything that is going back on Earth.

Nolan isn’t interested in escaping initially, but the more he talks about his past life, the more he begins to miss it and opens up to Allen’s idea.

Getting back home

Mark wanders the deserted world dealing with his emotions after killing Angstrom and having no way of getting back home.

He tries to justify it by claiming that he had no other choice because Angstrom would have killed his family.

Older Guardians show up from the future and tell Mark that they spent years trying to figure out the technology and find him.

They get ready to send him back to his time when Eve tells him that she has always loved him and he needs to tell her how he feels.

Team dynamics

Rudy attempts to fix Amanda’s curse so that she doesn’t age backward, but he approaches it entirely wrong and has to apologize to her.

He cares for her and promises that he will find a way to improve her condition. Kate shows up at the snowy mountain cabin where Immortal is spending his break.

She wanted to show up in person and tell him that she was alive. She kept her alpha hidden somewhere so that she wouldn’t die.

Mark meets Eve and tells her all about his fight with Angstrom and how everyone is doing. That is after he checked on his family and told his mother that he wanted to drop out of college.

He sits down with Eve and considers telling her his feelings like future Eve told him to, but he stops himself from doing so.
