As an adult, he keeps the memories of his parents close to his heart while taking on some perilous jobs aside from a normal one.

Gwon Seon-Yul’s tragic past

Gwon Seon-Yul’s parents were killed in a fire. He was eight years old then, and the only survivor of the incident.

It was a case of arson, committed by a woman named Jang Hyeong-Ja.

She had learned that her husband was having an affair. She confirmed it when she witnessed it first-hand from afar.

She wanted to kill them and so she set the room where they were on fire. However, she had not anticipated that the fire would spread so much.

While she was walking away from the street, the whole house was engulfed in flames and before she could snap out of the shock, an innocent family had perished because of her actions as well.

The survivor & the convict

One child survived, who was rescued by the firemen as he cried for his mother and father who were still inside the burning building.

During the counseling sessions, he used to be very wary right from the start. He was afraid of fire and had severe insomnia too. In the end, he refused treatment, so the sessions stopped.

Meanwhile, Hyeong-Ja hoped and prayed with all her heart that the child could endure the loss somehow.

She prayed for his survival and protection from prison, having been sentenced for her crimes without any leniency.

Hyeong-Ja started writing letters to the child, but she couldn’t dare to apologize to him because she was crushed by the weight of her guilt.

She meets Eun Soo-Hyun in prison, who had also been sentenced for exacting her revenge and grows close to her.

The diary

Before her imminent death from a terminal condition, she hands the diary of all those letters to Soo-Hyun and asks her to give it to the child whose family she unintentionally killed.

Soo-Hyun eventually gets out of prison and hands Gwon Seon-Yul that diary. At first, he’s triggered by it and is upset at her for reintroducing the pain he’s long buried.

However, after he learns about Soo-Hyun’s story and observes her kindness up close, he has a change of heart and reconsiders the diary.

He can’t bring himself to forgive Hyeong-Ja, but Gwon Seon-Yul asks for the diary back, considering giving it a read finally.
