Gunnar: Rebel Moon character explained

Gunnar is Kora’s love interest, who aids her in forming an army of rebels. Michiel Huisman plays Gunnar in the Rebel Moon film series.

Gunnar is part of a peaceful farming community. He is a resident of Veldt, where Kora lives in hiding.

As Gunnar is the one responsible for overseeing the harvest, he makes the decision to sell the surplus to the revolutionaries, the enemies of the Realm.

Eventually, Admiral Noble comes to Veldt to buy their grain. Believing that Noble will be willing to strike a fair deal, Gunnar wishes to sell their grain to him and form a lucrative partnership.

Gunnar ends up revealing to Noble that they produce more grain than their leader, Father Sindri, let on, resulting in Noble killing Sindri.

Noble then demands more than Veldt can give without starving their people, and Gunnar realizes how naive he was in thinking that he could have a fair deal with Noble.

The heart of his people

When Kora leaves Veldt to look for allies who would help them fight against Noble’s forces, Gunnar joins her to help her find the Bloodaxe siblings.

Believing Gunnar to be a coward, Kai, after betraying Kora and the rebels, asks Gunnar to kill her, aware that Gunnar is in love with Kora.

Instead of killing Kora, Gunnar frees her and shoots Kai instead, allowing Kora to fight and defeat Noble.

Gunnar, along with Kora and their new allies, then returns home, where he admits to Kora that the thought of losing her scared him more than the thought of dying.

This confession leads to Gunnar and Kora getting together. Kora trusts Gunnar to confide in him about her past, which she does not reveal to anyone else.

Gunnar does not judge Kora for her past actions. In fact, he supports her in her endeavor to be more than just a weapon.

Before the battle on Veldt, Kora decides to surrender herself for the sake of the villagers, but Gunnar refuses to let her do so.

Rebel Moon Gunnar
Gunnar’s signal marks the beginning of the battle

He gives the signal for attack, starting the battle and forcing Kora to stick to their plan. He does not leave her side even when she infiltrates Noble’s ship.

It is there that Gunnar is shot while trying to protect Kora. However, an injured Gunnar continues helping Kora in her fight against Noble.

Kora makes it out alive because of him, but Gunnar ends up losing his life. In his final moments, he tells Kora that he knows her and loves her for what she is.

Gunnar, who gave his people hope and was called the heart of his people by Sam, dies watching the rebels and the people of Veldt win the battle against Noble.
