Detective Diaz: Them: The Scare character explained

In Them: The Scare, Detective Diaz is of big help to Dawn when the entire LAPD is against her. Carlito Olivero plays Diaz.

Detective Diaz is an optimistic cop who is a huge fan of Dawn. He has been looking up to her ever since he joined the Robbery-Homicide division.

Dawn approaches Detective Diaz when the entire LAPD turns against her for leaking information on the case she is handling to the media, who use it to criticize the police department.

Dawn needs a partner, and she gives Diaz’s name to her lieutenant. However, before Diaz can accept this opportunity, she discloses that she did leak information to the media.

Diaz reminisces about how a killer was once caught because a man named Gil Carrillo reached out to the media.

Carillo and Diaz are from the same hood. Carillo is the reason he is now working in the Homicide Division.

Diaz’s role in the series

Detective Diaz absorbs all the information about Bernice Mott and Curtis Maynard’s cases and assists Dawn in understanding these crimes and other such cases that they discover along the way.

Diaz is quite good at digging up information and brings some really strong intelligence that is helpful. However, at the same time, he discovers Dawn’s connection to the case and proposes that maybe Dawn should let this case go.

Dawn gives Diaz a chance to walk out of the case

Diaz is unaware that Dawn doesn’t know about her past. While Dawn doesn’t back out, she gives Diaz a chance to walk out of the case, and he chooses not to walk out.

Saving Dawn

Dawn is detained when Benny Alvarez, a boy, dies in her presence. The boy is killed by Edmund, who proceeds to target Dawn’s son, Kel, and Dawn now.

Dawn loses her mother, Athena, to Edmund. It’s then that Diaz visits Dawn. Since Diaz is still investigating the case, Dawn hops back in and lets him in on the information she has on Edmund and his spirit.

Diaz gives everything Dawn tells him to McKinney, who plans to prove that Dawn is a psycho, paint her for these murders, and arrest her.

However, when Diaz sees McKinney mishandling the arrest of Dawn, he raises his gun but is ordered to lower it and is shot down by McKinney.

Dawn is able to kill McKinney. What saves her is Diaz’s testimony, which says Dawn acted in self-defense against McKinney.

Furthermore, Dawn possesses a recording of McKinney confessing one of his crimes before being killed by Dawn, which leads the panel investigating her to drop all the charges against her in Benny Alvarez’s case.
