Cat King: Dead Boy Detectives character explained

Cat King, a shapeshifting seducer and as the title suggests, the king of the cats, is one of the major supporting characters in Dead Boy Detectives.

The world of Dead Boy Detectives deals in ghosts, sprites, witches, goddesses, and a whole assortment of paranormal entities.

One such supernatural beings is the Cat King, a self-explanatory title of a being who takes a terrible liking to Edwin’s charms.

With nine lives at his disposal and a whole army of felines, he’s not more powerful than Esther the witch, who can absolutely brutalize him to death; he’s powerful enough to give the protagonists of the story a run for their money, or advice for their rescue mission.

Precursor to the Cat King

Edwin accompanies Charles and Crystal to Town Portsend, Washington, to help a young girl from the captivity of an evil witch.

Edwin ends up performing a spell on one of the stray cats, to get information about the witch from him. Casting spells on cats can get one into trouble, something the ghost comes to learn about pretty soon.

He’s summoned by the Cat King when he and the team are about to leave the town. Hundreds of cats gather and growl at them as they reach the lair of the ruler of the felines.

The first encounter

The Cat King meets Edwin and company and tells them about the perils one invites when casting a spell on one of his cats. The shapeshifter sends sexual energy right off the bat and promptly transports Edwin to his private space.

He’s hot and flirtatious with him, and very clearly wants him on his bed. However, he is also a consensual king, by his own admission, and so he gives Edwin to mull his feelings about it over and he gives him plenty of time for it as well.

Meanwhile, he ensures that Edwin doesn’t go anywhere, by binding him within the confines of the town, using a bracelet spell. Edwin can’t escape the town either physically or magically.

The spell breaks

As Edwin’s inability to travel out of the town leads to many more problems for him and his friends, he’s routinely visited by the Cat King, who’s always his seducing, lecherous self around the ghost from Britain.

After a certain time, he grows restless and also ends up revealing how Monty, another person who fawns over Edwin, has been a crow this entire time, doing the bidding of the evil witch who’s out to kill Edwin and his friends.

Edwin and his friends ultimately defeat the witch, and then Edwin is dragged back to hell by one horrible demon, which undoes the Cat King’s spell. After all the ordeals, it’s time for Edwin and friends to leave the town.

More than one shade

Before leaving, Edwin and the Cat King meet once again. Edwin introduces a moment of sincerity and seriousness when he tells him that they both are similar, in that they both are lonely. He reads the Cat King very accurately.

The Cat King also expresses his genuine sorrow at Edwin’s friend’s passing, which paints him as a totally different being than how he likes himself to be seen.

He’s also helpful and despite his antagonistic flair, he tells Crystal and Niko crucial information about Esther the witch, before they head off to rescue Edwin.
