Esther the witch: Dead Boy Detectives character explained

Esther Finch is one of the primary antagonists in the series premiere of Dead Boy Detectives. A powerful witch, her diabolical dreams and malicious machinations pose great threats to the protagonists.

Esther Finch the witch is one of the most formidable foes the dead boy detectives and Crystal find themselves contending with.

With her unmissable eccentric flair to her cruel and evil methods, the witch proves to be one diabolical menagerie of magical madness in the first season of the show.

Esther’s origins

Esther was one of the very first pioneers who came to Port Townsend before it was named so. They came by boat, by land, by hook and crook.

Esther was one of them who cut down forests and raised towns. She was tough and beautiful, but so was her wayward husband.

A real swinger, his affair with another woman hurt and angered Esther. To seek revenge she turned to books from her mother’s collection.

They contained blasphemous magic which she found to be addicting. She used the magic from the books to kill her cheating husband and his flame.

Immortality & dealing with the caveat

However, Esther had acquired a taste for magic, and arguably murder too. She grew older and more powerful, and her arrogance grew as well.

In that arrogance, she summoned the primordial goddess Lilith, to grant her immortality. She got it too, but with a caveat that made her curse the goddess.

She received eternal life but not eternal youth. She derided that and wanted that changed badly.

So she began kidnapping young girls in the town and feeding them to her large magical snake, who in turn made her younger for it.

The more young girls she sacrificed, the younger she got. Her steady rate of sacrifices caught the town folks’ attention, and they began ostracizing her and keeping her away until she learned how to blend in better.

A tango with ghosts & psychic

In the twenty-first century, she’s successfully living among the common folk of Port Townsend even with her immediately quirky and mischievous persona.

She routinely kidnaps girls and sacrifices them to the snake that she keeps in her basement. Hundreds of girls have become her target.

One such girl is rescued by the Dead Boy Detective Agency, and she’s defeated and deprived of her victim, but not for long.

Revenge against the dead boys

She sets out to take revenge against the teen paranormal investigators. She comes close to destroying Charles, Edwin, and Crystal, but the trio defeats her.

Later, she has a change of plans when she learns that Edwin has been to Hell and survived its torments for decades.

A new contraption makes it possible to juice a ghost’s pain and give her energy in return for it. Edwin’s pain tolerance makes him a golden goose and a source of constant energy and youth for her.

Defeat

But she fails to extract more than a glass’s worth of energy out of him before his friends turn up and fight her. She ends up killing Niko, but others fight her and defeat her.

Her youth is lost when her snake is slayed by Charles. Then Crystal summons Lilith and implores her to give justice to all the women Esther has tortured and killed.

An enraged Lilith drags Esther back with her and the witch supposedly meets her end. Although immortal still, Esther probably has no way to resume her evil plans for quite some time at least.
