Baek Hyun-Woo: Queen of Tears character explained

Baek Hyun-Woo is one of the main leads in the rom-com drama, Queen of Tears. Kim Soo-Hyun plays the character on the show.

Baek Hyun-Woo is the legal director of the Queens Group, the largest conglomerate in Korea. He is married to the heiress Hong Hae-In, who’s a third-generation chaebol.

He was born in the small village of Yongdu-Ri. He went on to graduate from Seoul National University and is one of the best lawyers out there.

Meeting Hae-In

He met Hong Hae-In when she was working as an intern at the Queens Department Store which she later came to own.

She was always a headstrong girl who always tinkered around with easy machines. Her daily battles with the photocopier drew Hyun-Woo’s attention and he gradually grew more concerned for her.

He didn’t know who she was and thought she was rather careless and could end up getting hurt. It became a frequent business of his to help her out, even when she didn’t need it.

He eventually proposed and he eventually found out that she’s the chaebol heiress of the Queens Group. They have the wedding of the century and have a great honeymoon.

Failing marriage

Three years later, their marriage is going through a patch rougher than gravel. He is the legal director for the business and routinely gets his in-laws out of trouble.

Baek Hyun-Woo also keeps an empathetic approach at work his say doesn’t hold much value when Hae-In is considered.

The whole office knows the couple is a dysfunctional one as their dynamic is frequently on display for everyone to see.

At home, his in-laws berate him and he doesn’t hold any important place there either. Meanwhile, Hae-In isn’t much help because she doesn’t stand up for him in his presence.

She does defend him all the time when he’s not around but since she’s not as expressive, and due to some other reasons, he’s come to think that she doesn’t care for him or love him at all.

An unfeasible divorce

After three years, his love for Hae-In has all but completely vanished. At least that’s what he thinks and hinges on his decision to file for divorce.

However, he knows that his father-in-law will subject anyone he considers to be turning their back on him to the worst punishment.

That’s why he can’t file for divorce yet, he can’t “turn his back” on his father-in-law or any of his in-laws, as he values his life.

The most important reason he can’t divorce now is that his wife is suffering from a very rare disease and has only three months to live.

He’s genuinely worried but he’s also kind of relieved at first, that he won’t have to divorce her.

A rekindling

As time passes, though, his old love starts to regrow for her and his care, affection, and concern for her become more and more sincere.

This rekindling of love is mutual but at the same time, Hae-In’s professional goals also prove to be a great difficulty, as well as bringing back an ex of hers, who makes Baek Hyun-Woo jealous and worried.

The couple begins to grow closer as more and more difficulties come their way, and despite all the odds, stand and face the storm ahead that they have to weather together.
