You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah review: A sweet depiction of adolescence and friendships

You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah follows Stacy, who will be having her bat mitzvah soon. However, nothing goes as planned when a popular boy comes between her and her best friend. The film is now streaming on Netflix.

Story

Stacy Friedman will be turning 13 this year, which means she will be having her bat mitzvah soon. Stacy and her childhood best friend, Lydia, have been planning and preparing for their bat mitzvahs their whole lives. They want their bat mitzvahs to be perfect.

Stacy likes Andy, the most popular boy at school, and keeps trying to impress him, but to no avail. She then finds out that the school’s popular girls are starting to notice Lydia. When one of them invites Lydia to her house, Lydia takes Stacy with her.

Lydia tries to stop Stacy from making one bad decision after another to get Andy’s attention but fails. As a result of her bad decisions, Stacy gets embarrassed and gets into a fight with Lydia.

When she later goes to Lydia’s house to make up with her, she finds Lydia kissing Andy. A heartbroken Stacy ends her friendship with Lydia and tells her that she is no longer invited to her bat mitzvah.

Neither of the two girls is ready to be the first one to apologize. Will they reconcile and celebrate their bat mitzvahs together, like they always planned, or will their bat mitzvahs turn out to be disasters?

Performances

What is great about Sunny Sandler, who plays Stacy, and Samantha Lorraine, who plays Lydia, is that they look and act like 13-year-olds. Their characters make stupid mistakes, but their convincing performances make everything believable.

Sadie Sandler, as Stacy’s older sister, is witty, and she definitely tickles the audience’s funny bone. There is no doubt about the fact that Adam Sandler, who plays Stacy’s father, is a good actor, but in this film, his daughters Sunny and Sadie Sandler steal the spotlight.

Positives

Unlike other teen dramas and films, You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah is a film in which teenagers look like teenagers, thanks to the appropriate casting. The relevant writing of the film further makes these characters seem like real people.

The film tells a sweet story of two friends who are about to start a new phase of their lives. It is a light-hearted story that captures the conflicts of adolescence without making them too dark. It will make the audience remember their own teen years.

The characters’ Jewish identity becomes an important part of the story, and the film celebrates it. It almost feels like the audience is allowed to be a part of the community and meet different characters when the film takes them to the inner circle.

Negatives

The film is not as funny as it was expected to be. Despite the actors’ efforts, not all jokes land. It will make the audience chuckle but not laugh loudly.

Verdict

You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah is an enjoyable film that depicts adolescence and teen friendships in all their sweetness and innocence with a touch of light angst. It is one of those light-hearted films that everyone likes to watch every once in a while.
