The Indrani Mukerjea Story: Buried Truth review: Wild ride through crime, coverups & conspiracies

The Indrani Mukerjea Story: Buried Truth digs into the disappearance of 25-year-old Sheena Bora, a case that took the nation by storm. The docuseries is available to stream on Netflix.

Story

Media picks up the alleged murder of Sheen Bora, and a storm rages on shortly, that exposes the scandalous world of a Mumbai socialite family.

Secret phone recordings emerge and Indrani Mukerjea, the older sister of Sheena, who’s actually her mother, becomes the primary suspect.

Indrani faces the camera and delves into her past, with claims that paint a truly disturbing picture.

Peter Mukerjea’s role is brought to the forefront and speculations of a cover-up grow. Indrani’s past marriages and husbands are also dissected.

Mekhail Mukerjea’s claims redirect the focus on Indrani, as Rahul and Sheena’s relationship is recounted. The rise and fall of the Mukerjea empire is also delved into.

The case is made more bizarre by new messages and emails from a supposedly dead person.

As journalists pursue the truth, Rahul takes the stand, before Indrani’s current statement regarding the whole morbid circus is presented.

Positives

The case is inherently fascinating and each and every part of this long-running trial is almost like they all exist in service of making a thrilling movie adaptation out of the whole affair.

The sudden candid moments with the interviewers where they’re caught off-guard make for some good highlights, even if they might not entail any revelatory implications.

Negatives

The nature of the subject matter and the larger-than-life personalities of everyone involved do paint a dramatic silhouette of the story, but the media have too sensationalized the case at hand for years.

The docuseries could have focused more on Indrani Mukerjea’s tussle with the hierarchical tug-of-war at INX Media and in general with the whole media empire she became a part of.

Verdict

The Indrani Mukerjea Story: Buried Truth is a gripping compendium of conspiracies regarding what happened in the Sheena Bora disappearance case that has bested authorities for years on end.
