In Love All Over Again review: Charming and enjoyable love story

In Love All Over Again is a romance series about Irene and Julio who are drawn together and pushed apart constantly with the film industry as their backdrop. The series is streaming on Netflix.

Story

Irene and Julio are two people who cross paths while they’re in university and that first meeting leads to a whirlwind romance that involves infidelity, insecurities, and the glamor of the film industry.

Irene dreams of being a director someday while Julio is a law student with a charisma that Irene sees the first time they meet. On that very night, they get on a train that is hit by a bomb blast giving them both a traumatic experience.

While Irene continues to pursue her dream, Julio stumbles onto some lucky breaks as he becomes a huge movie star. They are together, they argue, split up, and continue the cycle on multiple occasions as these star-crossed lovers cannot seem to be kept apart.

Performances

Georgina Amorós is likable as Irene, the doe-eyed girl from a small province but has big dreams for herself. Amorós portrays the naivety and general instability of a young adult stumbling through life and learning things the hard way.

Franco Masini’s character by contrast is alluring and filled with charisma but that wonderful exterior is bruised and battered with the industry until Julio is forced to self-medicate to feel something. Masini depicts all of this with authenticity and poise.

Blanca Martínez and Carlos González play Jimena and Da respectively, and they’re a wonderful foil for the protagonists adding their own little sprinkle of pizazz.

Alberto Salazar plays Fer, the on-again-off-again love interest who is clumsy and oblivious when it comes to romance. He’s well-meaning and Salazar puts that across very effectively.

Positives

There’s something appealing about the aughts that cannot be truly explained in words and this series captures that vibe immaculately. The early days of Irene and Julio’s romance with Madrid and the university as the backdrop are infatuating.

With the film industry being a key focus in the series, there is an efficient use of intriguing camera angles and shots. The cinematography is exquisite and the framing tells a story on its own.

The script is exceptionally written as these characters express their feelings with entrancing words. Much thought has gone into the tone that the script needs to set and it succeeds in its execution.

Negatives

The story does suffer from being dragged along at times and the uneven pace isn’t ideal. The love life of Jimena and Da is chaotic and glossed over until it is relevant and that isn’t handled with the same level of care.

Having the two of them go through this rollercoaster is a wonderful idea but the writers and creator are at total risk of overdoing it and making it seem like a toxic relationship where the two people are better off apart.

Verdict

In Love All Over Again is a sweet love story that has an interesting story about two very ordinary-seeming people. There are moments where the audience might drift off but on the whole, this series definitely has enough to keep you invested in their journey.
