Diary of a Wimpy Kid Christmas: Cabin Fever review: A warm, festive feature

Diary of a Wimpy Kid Christmas: Cabin Fever follows Greg Heffley as he tries his best not to make it to the naughty list and get his desired Christmas present. The film is currently streaming on Disney+.

Story

Greg and Rowley mess up a snowman and the big snowball only gets bigger and faster as it rolls down the street and collides with the snowplow lady’s truck.

Worried they’ll be caught, Greg thinks of dumping the incriminating evidence as he goes back to trying not to do any more naughty stuff, at least intentionally.

A snowstorm takes the whole power grid out and the family is thrown into a tizzy trying to contend with it. Greg learns the dumpster they discarded the evidence in is actually a donation box.

He retrieves the evidence but encounters the snowplow lady. She doesn’t recognize him and has a great time chatting and handing out advice while dropping him home.

She does eventually recognize him but lets him off the hook. Later, the police arrive and Greg thinks they’re there for the snowball incident but are not.

Greg is thankful and decides to donate his video game system present to the snowplow lady’s kid, who she earlier told him had been wanting the same thing but couldn’t buy it yet.

The family celebrates Christmas and Greg thinks of the next year’s presents, as Diary of a Wimpy Kid Christmas: Cabin Fever rolls the credits.

Performances

Wesley Kimmel is the perfect cast for Greg Heffley as he captures the iconic character’s charms and personality really well.

Spencer Howell is as adorable as Rowley, and his comedic timing is great too. Hunter Dillon is Rodrick and does a great job as a punk teenager with a kind heart.

Positives

The short adventure comedy exudes undeniable festive spirits and provides the right warm, fuzzy feeling this Christmas season.

The voices are perfectly cast, and Gracen Newton as the little chaotic agent that is Manny, also lends so much fun to the whole affair.

The comedy also works surprisingly well and certain moments ring surprisingly mature.

Negatives

Rodrick could have been a bigger and more significant part of the narrative here which would have made matters more exciting whereas the final cut is somewhat inconsistent with the energy.

Verdict

Diary of a Wimpy Kid Christmas: Cabin Fever is a fuzzy little festive treat and another solid installment of the titular franchise. The voices, comedy, and animation all work in tandem to make this one a great Christmas binge.
