In Jujutsu Kaisen season 2 episode 17, Megumi summons the ultimate shikigami, who squares up with Sukuna in a terrifying battle.

In a dire state after Haruta’s sneak attack, Megumi resorts to the final counter, summoning the ultimate shikigami called Mahoraga who has never been tamed by anyone.

Mahoraga is unleashed, and it promptly flicks Megumi and goes to attack Haruta, who is quickly moved out of the way by Sukuna, who realizes he must dispose of Mahoraga so that the ritual doesn’t end up killing Megumi.

He engages in a horrifying battle with Mahoraga, who can adapt to any attack, so Sukuna realizes he must unleash a new offense while giving the shikigami no time to adapt to it.

He activates his domain expansion called Malevolent Shrine and slashes anything and everything and everyone to oblivion. Mahoraga is finally defeated. Sukuna promptly drops off Megumi’s body near other sorcerers so he can be healed.

He then arrives near the destruction that he’s caused in his battle just as Yuji is about to wake up. Yuji is aghast and shocked beyond his mind, before giving in to all the despair. However, he does compose himself for the fight ahead.

Nanami, half-burnt, walks down the subway as Jujutsu Kaisen season 2 episode 17 concludes.

Review

In an episode filled with destruction and deaths in such staggering numbers, Nanami’s half-burnt body persevering through death in the final moments of the episode seems especially heavy.
Jujutsu Kaisen once again delivers remarkably on the animation front, as Mahoraga’s might have done so much justice with the eclectic burst of colors and creativity.
Sukuna’s prowess seems a notch above impossible and it only makes the prospect of the battle between him and Gojo more confounding as to how that would come to fruition.
One important thing that anyone would be ignorant not to touch on is the terrible working conditions of the animators who have produced such striking visuals for the anime. This unfortunate reality must not elude anyone and must be acknowledged and condemned by all.
