Demon Slayer season 3 episode 9 recap & review: Mist Hashira Muichiro Tokito

In Demon Slayer season 3 episode 9, Tokito takes on Gyokko as he tries to finish the job and the Upper-Rank demon.

Recap

Tokito faces off against Gyokko, who still can’t overcome his need to be recognized as an artisan or help the fact that he’s a massive nuisance. Muichiro doesn’t play into any of his ploys and doesn’t get swayed. In fact, it is he who delivers Gyokko several humiliating remarks.

When the demon slayer calls his vases asymmetrical and a piece of crap, Gyokko can’t hold it any longer and launches his Blood Demon Art. However, Muichiro makes quick work of it and expels all his opponent’s attacks. He later takes on Gyokko and his moves with ease, defeating the slayer with an impressive set of moves.

After insulting Gyokko and his creations, Tokito takes on his enraged set of moves, guarding against the demon with unnaturally focused energy. Finally, Tokito manages to kill others and perish Gyokko’s body, before succumbing to his wounds and injuries and beginning to foam from his mouth.

Before finishing him off, Tokito remembers how after his brother’s death, Lady Amane helped with his rescue and recovery, before Tokito forgot about the event and started training like an animal. In the present day, the battle between Tanjiro’s faction and Hantengu takes a worse shape.

The new, combined form of the demon leaves no space for Tanjiro to wriggle out of, bombarding him with the attacking wooden dragons, which manage to give his foot a nasty cut, burst his eardrums, and make him dread the battle.

When all hope seems lost, and the wooden dragons have almost crushed Tanjiro, Nezuko, and Genya, it’s the Love Hashira Kanroji who comes to the rescue.

Review

  • Mitsuri’s entry is both reassuring and awe-inspiring, as her attacks manage not just to push back Hantengu but prevent him from dealing more critical damage to Tanjiro and company.
  • Demon Slayer season 3 episode 9 is best when it’s focused on Muichiro, who himself is preternaturally focused while taking on the vase demon.
  • Unlike other demons, Gyokko’s backstory isn’t revealed and he dies before the soppy routine of coming to terms with their humanity is run.
