Game of Thrones creators set to adapt The Three-Body Problem as Netflix web series

It’s time to rejoice for science-fiction fanatics as The Three-Body Problem by Liu Cixin is set to be converted into a Netflix original series. The web series will be helmed by none other than the creators of the Game of Thrones, David Benioff & D.B. Weiss.

Also in the team are writer Alexander Woo (known for True Blood), Rian Johnson and Ram Bergman (writers and directors of Star Wars: The Last Jedi).

‘Remembrance of Earth’s Past’ is a trilogy by Hugo Award-winning Chinese science fiction writer Liu Cixin. The novels in the trilogy are The Three-Body Problem, The Dark Forest, and Death’s End. It is one of the most popular science-fiction novels in China.

Translated by multiple Hugo Award-winning American author of science fiction and fantasy Ken Liu and Beijing-based translator Joel Martinsen; the trilogy went on to become an international best-seller.

The trilogy is a classic science fiction where Earth is waiting for an invasion from an alien civilisation which is on the brink of destruction. The Three-Body Problem portrays an alternate history where the universe consists of three solar-type stars orbiting each other in an unstable three-body problem.

The diehard fans of the books need not fear as both Liu Cixin and Ken Liu have joined the web series’ creative team as consulting producers to ‘help ensure that the spirit of the books remains intact’.

For now, it is only The Three-Body Problem and its two sequels are being made into this web series. There is no mention as of now about The Redemption of Time, which is the fourth book and which continues Liu Cixin’s science fiction saga. Written by Baoshu and published with Liu’s support, it visualises Earth after the conflict between humanity and the extra-terrestrials.

Talking about his beloved books being converted into a web series, Liu Cixin said in a statement:

“I have the greatest respect for and faith in the creative team adapting The Three-Body Problem for television audiences. I  set out to tell a story that transcends time and the confines of nations, cultures and races; one that compels us to consider the fate of humankind as a whole. It is a great honour as an author to see this unique sci-fi concept travel and gain fandom across the globe and I am excited for new and existing fans all over the world to discover the story on Netflix.”
