‘Malignant’ marks James Wan’s return to horror

Director James Wan, the architect of the ‘Conjuring’ universe, returns to cinema with a ‘new and original’ horror film ‘Malignant.’ it will release in theatres nationwide on September 10 and will be available to stream ad-free on HBO Max for 31 days after its theatrical release.

The trailer for ‘Malignant’ was recently released. Starring in the film will be the ‘Peaky Blinders’ actor Anabelle Wallis, Maddie Hasson, George Young, Michole Briana White, Jacqueline McKenzie, Jake Abel and Ingrid Bisu.

Wallis plays Madison, who envisions shocking grisly murders and is paralysed by it. Her torment worsens when she soon realises that they are more than just mere visions but, in fact, a terrifying reality. 

As fear grips her, she realises that the man behind these murders is Gabriel. And this is not the only time he has tormented her. He contacted her as a child and was the only one who could see him.

Akela Cooper is behind the screenplay while also contributing to the story along with Wan and Ingrid Bisu. Eric McLeod, Judson Scott, Bisu, Peter Luo, Cheng Yang.  Mandy Yu and Lei Han will serve as executive producers. The film is produced by Wan and Michael Clear.

In an interview with IGN India, Wan expressed that almost everything about ‘Malignant’ is kept under the wraps through his insistence. 

While talking about the significance of the title, The Saw director explained, “…With Malignant, I just felt like this title really encompasses the tone of the film, the subject matter, which actually has a fair bit of medical horror attached to it. So it just felt appropriate.”
