Set in a fictional universe where the people of Earth successfully survived a zombie apocalypse through military efforts and even managed to partially cure the remaining reanimated zombies, the surviving undead is rehabilitated within society amidst severe backlash from the living. Kieren Walker (Newberry) is an undead teenager who returns to his family but suffers from ridicule due to his condition.

A slightly more dramatic take on the sub-genre, ‘In the Flesh’ is one of many series on this list that was prematurely cancelled after a 2 season run.

4. iZombie

Cast: Rose McIver, Malcolm Goodwin, Rahul Kohli, Robert Buckley, David Anders

When Liv Moore (McIver) wakes up after a wild night at a party, she realizes that she’s turned into a zombie and begins to crave the human brain. She also learns that every time she consumes a brain, she temporarily gets that persons memories and traits. This power lets her assist a detective in solving several crimes under the guise of a ‘psychic’.

iZombie is yet another comedy zombie series that doesn’t follow the usual formula and benefits from the varied approach.

5. Glitch

When 7 seemingly random people rise from the dead in perfect physical condition but without any memories, it throws the small fictional town of Yoorana, Victoria into a state of panic as they aim to figure out why these people have returned and what connects them all.

This Australian mystery series received much critical acclaim in its home nation and also has favourable mentions online which is why it makes it onto this list.

6. Santa Clarita Diet

When Sheila (Barrymore) dies and wakes up as a zombie, she and her husband (Olyphant) try to go on with their lives as if nothing happened while secretly working towards satisfying her cravings for human flesh. As their family learns more about the history of zombies, they come across some long preserved secrets that just add more chaos into their lives.

Santa Clarita Diet is a Netflix original that ran for 3 well-received seasons that involved some fantastic humour and an intriguing story from start to finish.

7. Black Summer

Cast: Jaime King, Justin Chu Cary, Christine Lee, Zoe Marlett, Kelsey Flower, Sal Velez Jr.

Rose (King) is separated from her daughter by the military when a zombie apocalypse hits North America. She joins forces with a band of refugees as they travel across the death ridden nation in search of her daughter and a haven. Along their way, they are forced to make some very difficult decisions in the name of their survival.

‘Black Summer’ is a terror-filled series that keeps the audience on the edge of their seats throughout without any sort of drop off in overall quality.

8. The Last Kids on Earth

Cast: Nick Wolfhard, Montse Hernandez, Garland Whitt, Charles Demers, Mark Hamill

After a strange portal unleashes a zombie horde and various gigantic monsters on earth, most of the population is either moved to a safe location or has succumbed to terrors running wild. Jack Sullivan (Wolfhard) is a previously awkward teenager who with the help of his best friends turns into a post-apocalyptic survival expert.

This light-hearted animated series is one for more casual viewers who can enjoy a more toned down yet equally exciting zombie-filled story.

9. Post Mortem: No One Dies in Skarnes

Cast: Kathrine Thorborg Johansen, Elias Holmen Sørensen, André Sørum, Kim Fairchild, Sara Khorami

Live Hallangen (Johansen) is found dead in a field one day but wakes up from her state on the autopsy table. While her supposed death is attributed to hypothermia, there is something strange about her. She has a thirst for blood and heightened senses and strength that aid her and her brother in their quest to save the family funeral home business by making some questionable decisions.

This Norwegian series focuses on a slightly different kind of undead but the hijinks taking place in this small town are sure to make the audience gasp with joy or surprise.

10. Fear the Walking Dead

Cast: Kim Dickens, Frank Dillane, Cliff Curtis, Rubén Blades, Alycia Debnam-Carey, Colman Domingo, Danay Garcia, Lennie James

‘Fear the Walking Dead’ initially served as a prequel spin-off of ‘The Walking Dead’ but ran concurrently from the 4th season onwards. Set in California, and later Texas and Mexico, it focuses on a blended family during the onset of the zombie apocalypse. Later seasons follow Morgan Jones (James) as he meets with the surviving members of the family as they look to outlast this life-threatening predicament.

Fear of The Walking Dead has garnered a similar following to its sister series with its popularity earning it a renewal for an 8th season back in December.
