Plot summary

Kuan-Yu aspires to be a Parkour influencer and make money, and he slacks when it comes to performing the Zhong Kui Opera, thinking less of it.

His live-streamer buddy Kuei-Tsai is called to do a cleaning of a room at the cursed hotel called Meihuang. The room is where a man recently hanged himself to death.

The owner of the hotel, Ms. Wan-Hua, is visited by her estranged husband who’s come to collect money for his gambling and sex needs. Wan-Hua’s son Jui-Jui seems to be possessed and the father is soon killed by the demon.

His escort is killed earlier, by the same demonic entity, in the hallway. Soon, Kuei-Tsai is killed too before Kuan-Yu, who also took on the job, catches on to the supernatural entities.

His father learns where his son is and rushes to save his son, performing a Zhong Kui exorcism to do so. He later sacrifices himself after teaching his son how to do the Taoism mudra.

Along with Chia-Min, Kuan-Yu fights against the Thai demon and performs the Zhong Kui Opera to success, exorcising the demon away, as The Rope Curse 3 rolls the credits.

Ending explained:

A tragic past

Kuan-Yu had a sister during childhood. One day, their father took the two to a river and while he performed the Zhong Kui ritual, he asked Kuan-Yu to look after his sister.

As she walks into the river to retrieve one of her things, she gets swept away by the water while Kuan-Yu is momentarily distracted. When he notices and follows after her, it’s already too late.

His sister dies and soon their father is notified of the same. This event stays with Kuan-Yu, and he grows up feeling guilty for not being able to save his sister.

Before the third act of The Rope Curse 3, he reconciles with his father, and the two ease each other’s hearts regarding the death of their loved one, helping each other see that neither of them was at fault.

Continuing the legacy

Kuan-Yu carries the guilt for his sister’s death since childhood. As a grown-up, he is a part of his father’s Zhong Kui Opera troupe.

His father wants him to carry his legacy and become a great performer, but Kuan-Yu wants to become a Parkour influencer, because it’s his passion, and he believes it can also make him money, unlike the troupe.

He takes the opera performance and his exorcism side of his family with disregard. He’s also atheistic when it comes to the supernatural.

However, when he finds himself smack dab in the middle of the preternatural events at the Meihuang Hotel, he has to employ what his father taught him to survive the demons.

His father, before his death, teaches him another mudra that comes in handy later on.

During The Rope Curse 3‘s climactic battle between him and the Thai demon, he performs the Seven Step Star Method and performs a successful Zhong Kui ritual, managing to summon Zhong Kui’s spirit and exorcise the demon.

As the movie ends, he has decided to keep his father’s legacy alive by performing the Opera with enthusiasm and his unique flair.
