The hidden treasure in Bandidos explained

In Bandidos, a group of misfits search for a 500-year-old Mayan treasure that no one has been able to find.

Miguel’s father, Juan Morales, is an archaeologist who devoted his life to finding what he referred to as the greatest treasure that no one saw.

The treasure is regarded as a legend by many, as no trace of it has ever been found. However, an encounter with a man named Luis Fernández de Montejo convinces Miguel of its existence.

The history

Hastoc was the last ruler of the Kaan Dynasty, which was the largest in the Mayan world. Hastoc was also the first ruler to discover gold.

Throughout his reign, he dedicated himself to accumulating gold, and when he died, all of his riches were buried with him.

Among his treasures was a golden jaguar known as Kaan Balam. It was believed that this jaguar had the power to bring him back from the underworld.

Centuries later, this treasure, known as the Aj Took’s treasure, was discovered by three Spanish conquerors in Hastoc’s pyramid.

They decided to store the treasure in a chest that could only be opened with three keys, representing the Sun, the Moon, and the Earth.

The three keys

Each conqueror received one key. However, one of them, Francisco de Montejo, was a con man who betrayed the others.

The keys he gave to the other two were useless; only the moon stone, Francisco’s key, could unlock the treasure chest.

Additionally, Francisco absconded with the chest, even betraying the woman he loved, who had led him to the treasure.

All that remained in the pyramid was a letter from Francisco to his beloved, apologizing for breaking his promise and returning to Spain.

The discovery

Francisco never took the treasure to Spain. Instead, he hid it somewhere, leaving behind a map as an inheritance.

This is the map that Luis Fernández de Montejo, Francisco’s descendant, shows Miguel. The map leads Miguel to a cenote, where the moon key is hidden.

Eventually, Lilí deduces that Francisco deliberately sank the ship carrying the treasure to keep it for himself and his family.

Miguel is able to locate the ship’s hiding place after recalling that Luis had mentioned  Francisco’s map had holes in it.

These holes indicated stars, and their positions were supposed to guide his descendants to the hidden treasure.

Miguel’s group finds the treasure, but they are pursued by the boss and Ariel. In the ensuing confrontation, the boss is killed, and Ariel demands the jaguar.

As Ariel calls the police, the group faces the risk of losing the treasure, so they agree to let Ariel display the jaguar in his museum and divide the remaining gold among themselves.
