Ruby and Da Tap Dance Man’s cameos in Them: The Scare explained

Though set three decades in the future from the first season, Them: The Scare sees some past faces returning in the form of Ruby and Da Tap Dance Man.

In Them: The Scare, the entity haunting the Reeves forces Athena, Dawn’s mother, to tell Dawn the truth about her parents.

Dawn grapples with the knowledge that she’s adopted, which leads to her disappointment in Athena for not being upfront about it.

By the end of the series, Dawn not only learns who her mother is, but she also discovers a picture of her mother’s family that welcomes an unwanted guest into the house.

Ruby’s appearance

The entity haunting the Reeves and committing the terrifying murders that Dawn is investigating is revealed to be Edmund Gaines, the twin brother of Dawn.

When Dawn and Edmund face each other in a final battle in the finale of the second season, Dawn is thrown into the past, where she sees her mother, who is a familiar face.

Ruby Lee Emory is revealed to be the mother of Dawn and Edmund. Dawn sees her talking to the foster mother, Benice, who takes her and her brother in.

Ruby explains that her husband took off and she doesn’t think she is the right person to raise Dawn and Edmund.

She doesn’t want Dawn and Edmund to go through what she, her mother, and her family went through. Hence, she gives them away to the foster mother.

Da Tap Dance Man’s appearance

Six months after stopping Edmund, Dawn goes through Edmund’s belongings. She finds a picture of her and Edmund as kids, as well as a picture of the Emory family.

Upon discovering that picture, an entity enters Dawn’s house. The entity is revealed to be Da Tap Dance Man, who comes in whistling. Da Tap Dance Man sings as Dawn stares at him in fear.
