Richter Belmont: Castlevania: Nocturne character explained

Richter Belmont, Castlevania: Nocturne‘s protagonist, is a vampire hunter who is one of the last surviving members of the Belmont clan. Edward Bluemel voices Richter.

When Richter was young, he used to live in Boston with his mother. In 1783, when he was ten years old, his mother wanted to send him to France to live with a distant relative, Tera, for his own safety.

Before leaving, Richter saw his mother get killed by a vampire, Olrox. The vampire did not kill Richter then, but he promised to kill him one day in the future. Like his mother, Richter also possessed magic, but the day his mother died, Richter lost it.

New allies and enemies

Nine years after his mother’s death, Richter carries on her legacy. He is a vampire hunter, just like her, and he uses her whip to fight vampires and other dangerous creatures. He is proud of being a Belmont.

Richter lives with Tera and her daughter, Maria, who is a witch and a revolutionary. When Richter and Maria hear about the Vampire Messiah, they start looking into the matter to find out what is going on.

Richter is then visited by two people from Saint-Domingue, Annette and Edouard. They know who the Messiah is and what she aims to do, as Annette’s mentor, a powerful seer and sorceress, had a vision of the deadly future that the Messiah will bring about.

She asked Annette to find Richter to stop the Messiah before it was too late, which indicates that Richter might play an important role in defeating the Messiah. Richter, Maria, and Julia then join forces with Annette and Edouard to stop the rise of the Messiah.

However, Annette soon gets a reason to question whether Richter is up to the task or not. When Richter, who is full of bravado, comes face to face with Olrox, he gets so scared that he runs away, leaving Maria, Julia, and Annette behind.

Becoming a Belmont

When Richter runs away, he ends up meeting his grandfather, Juste. Richter believed that he was the only surviving Belmont, as he was told that his grandfather was dead. It turns out that Richter’s grandfather has been watching him and keeping him safe for years now.

After Juste talks to Richter about his past and regrets, Richter and Juste are attacked by a group of vampires. When they are about to kill Richter, he realizes that he wants to live, as there are people in this world he loves and wants to protect.

Richter’s magic returns, stronger than ever before, and he kills the vampires easily. He makes a choice about the kind of person he wants to be for the first time in his life, and he chooses to be a Belmont.

He protects his loved ones with his life and overcomes his fear of Olrox as well. He is ready to fight Olrox when he faces him the next time. He even gives Drolta Tzuentes, a powerful vampire, a tough fight and almost kills her.

Later, when Richter, Annette, and Maria are chased by Drolta Tzuentes, it is Alucard, the son of Dracula, who comes to their rescue. Alucard recognizes Richter, the man who might be able to defeat the powerful Messiah.
