What is Peter’s father accused of in The Night Agent?

In The Night Agent, Peter Sutherland, a low-level FBI agent, faces hate from his seniors and people around the world because his father was a traitor to the country.

Peter lived every day defending his father, who never got a chance to prove that he was innocent, as he died in a car accident.

Things got worse for Peter when he got blamed for a metro bombing, despite being the person who saved most of the people on that train, just because he was his father’s son.

What exactly did Peter’s father do?

In the seventh episode of The Night Agent, while Peter and Rose hid inside Peter’s godfather’s boat, he confessed what his father was accused of.

Peter reveals that classified documents were leaked back in the day. These leaked documents compromised U.S. defense strategies around the world. The breach was traced back to the FBI’s counterintelligence division.

Peter’s father was the section chief of that division. The FBI planned to charge Peter’s father, but he died before he could prove his innocence. None of the evidence found against Peter’s father was made public.

The truth about Peter’s father

In the finale of The Night Agent, Peter saved President Michelle Travers’ life, and she, in return, allowed him to ask for anything.

Peter used the opportunity to see if his father was truly guilty or not. Peter is shown a video of his father’s interview, in which he spoke about what really went down.

Apparently, in 2004, a foreign agent, seeking to undermine American interests, approached Peter’s father, who, at the time, didn’t know these were foreign agents.

Peter’s father figured out who they were when he was offered his first payment for providing information on private contractors and commercial stuff. He thought this information wouldn’t lead anywhere.

Unfortunately, the information Peter’s father sold led to the Pentagon breach. Peter didn’t finish the video after learning that his father is, in fact, a traitor.

President Travers further shed light on why his father cooperated with them. It turns out that his father had agreed to be a double agent for his country. He was in the process of being prepped for deployment, but the plan backfired when a foreign agent killed Peter’s father to stop him from working for the FBI, which means Peter’s father didn’t die in a car accident or kill himself in one.

The assassin responsible for killing Peter’s father was later tracked down and killed by Delta Force operators. The public will never know about this assassin, and neither will they know the truth about Peter’s father.
