Olrox: Castlevania: Nocturne character explained

In Castlevania: Nocturne, Olrox is the one vampire who inspires fear in Richter. Zahn McClarnon voices Olrox.

When Richter was ten years old, his mother, Julia, wanted to send him to France to live with Tera and Maria. Before Richter left Boston, his mother was attacked by a powerful vampire named Olrox.

Their fight ended with Olrox killing Julia, and Richter had to watch his mother die. Olrox spared Richter’s life on that day but promised to kill him someday in the future. Olrox then became Richter’s worst nightmare.

Doubts and disloyalty

Nine years later, vampires flock to France to witness the rise of the Vampire Messiah. Olrox also comes to Machecoul to meet Erzsebet, who wants to use him to conquer America after she is done with Europe.

Olrox is well aware of how cruel and selfish Erzsebet can be, so before meeting her, he decides to find out what is going on in Machecoul. He figures out that Erzsebet and the Abbot are working together and that the Abbot plans to betray Erzsebet once the revolution ends.

Olrox also warns Mizrak that Erzsebet will dispose of them once she deems they are no longer useful to her. Olrox has seen his people getting slaughtered by the colonizers in the name of their God, so he finds it hard to believe in anything.

He refuses to blindly follow and worship Erzsebet like the other vampires. However, he also knows what is good for him, so when he sees Erzsebet’s powers, he bows down to her. However, Erzsebet’s powers cannot win Olrox’s loyalty.

Even the idea of being free to step outdoors at any time of the day, without worrying about the Sun, does not tempt him. He gives Richter and his friends the book that the Abbot has been using to forge night creatures.

Olrox does not want to kill or fight Richter. He just asks him to read the book and destroy the machine, as Olrox cannot do it himself. Richter has no choice but to trust his worst enemy, as this might be the only way to stop Erzsebet.

Loving and losing

When Olrox comes to Machecoul, he meets Mizrak, the Abbot’s right-hand man. The two of them start sleeping together and meeting regularly. One day, Olrox tells Mizrak about his past.

Olrox has only ever loved one man. The man he loved was a Mohican living in Massachusetts, which was a colony at that time. He was passionate about winning freedom and fought for it with the revolutionaries.

Olrox is an Aztec and his land was stolen by the colonizers, but the man he loved almost made him believe in the idea of freedom. Olrox wanted him to live with him forever, so he turned him into a vampire. He was then killed by Julia, which led to Olrox avenging his death.

Olrox claims that he is not in love with Mizrak, but when Mizrak sides with Richter’s group and attacks the abbey, Olrox watches him closely to ensure his safety. He comes to his rescue when he gets attacked by too many vampires.

Later, Mizrak tries to attack Erzsebet, but Olrox stops him and takes him away from the abbey against his wishes. He admits to Mizrak that he does not want him to die with tears in his eyes.

However, Mizrak thinks of Olrox as an animal who lost his soul a long time ago, so he leaves him to go back to his companions. Olrox cannot do anything except watch him walk away.
