In Beautiful Rebel, Marc is a photographer who comes to Gianna when she is alone and at her lowest. Stefano Rossi Giordani plays Marc.
Marc first appears during a party at Gianna’s house, where he listens to her singing and playing the piano. He clicks on a picture of hers.
A couple of days later, the two cross paths again, but Gianna fails to recognize Marc. Gianna and Marc eventually make love when Gianna notices Carla in a crowd but fails to find her. This sees her turning to Marc.
Throughout the film, Marc keeps appearing from time to time in Gianna’s life. Sometimes Marc comes to her, and other times she finds him.
Gianna almost develops a relationship with Marc that is similar to what she has with Carla, also known as Eleven. Much like Carla, even Marc is named by Gianna as Sixteen.
However, near the end of the film, when friends and colleagues of Gianna begin noticing her strange behavior, they see her talking to someone who isn’t there, and it’s Marc whom Gianna is attempting to communicate with.
Is Marc real or not?
It is hinted that Marc is just a figment of Gianna’s imagination. He never communicates with or talks to anyone else but Gianna in person. No one else seems to even notice him.
Marc seems to appear whenever Gianna takes drugs. In one of the scenes, Marc can be seen introducing Gianna to a drug.
Gianna makes the worst decisions when she is around Marc, who is guiding her. When a doctor examines Gianna, he concludes that Gianna has a psychosis of the hallucinatory type.
Once Gianna starts treating herself, Marc disappears. In a scene with Carla, Gianna says that Marc isn’t real and questions who she made love with if Marc never existed.
