Plot summary:

A couple enjoys a drink on their porch when something alerts them of an approaching vehicle.

They prepare to escape but the woman says she’s tired of running. They arm themselves but it’s fruitless as the people approaching kill them quickly.

Two strangers are interviewed by an automated screen on intimate details and then assigned to a location in New York with new identities.

John and Jane Smith are supposed to pose as a married couple while they carry out missions for a clandestine “company”.

Their first mission is interception of a package and delivery to a different location, and it goes along relatively easily.

However, the package was a bomb and they got out just moments before it was set off.

They spend the mission getting to know a little bit about each other and setting some ground rules for their arrangement.

Their orders are relayed through a messaging app, and their supervisor begins all their exchanges with “hihi”, so John and Jane refer to him as such.

The second mission involves extracting information out of someone but it doesn’t go according to plan.

They get the information but the target dies. Hihi informs them that they have failed once and they only have two fails remaining.

John and Jane bond over the trauma of killing someone. By the next mission, they are behaving like a true married couple.

They are ordered to observe an important individual and her husband. The targets have a rocky marriage and it tests John and Jane’s dynamic.

The mission is successful and John and Jane grow closer to each other. On their day off, they meet Other John, a fellow spy for “the company”.

He suggests having dinner at their place and brings along Other Jane, his partner. John and Jane signed up for ‘high risk’ missions, but Other John and Other Jane are at the ‘super high risk’ level.

They have a lively dinner and then Other John and Other Jane say that they have to head out on a mission.

They invite their hosts along to see what a super high-risk mission is like and send John and Jane by themselves.

John and Jane are taken to a jungle in the mountains somewhere and are captured by some guerillas.

They manage to escape after killing the captain there and Other John and Other Jane send them the payment for doing their job.

On one particular mission, the couple heads to Italy to protect an evil man named Toby. They fend off multiple assassins while also taking care of an elderly Toby.

Cracks begin to appear in their relationship as they express differences of opinion and goals in their life.

John would like to have kids someday but Jane doesn’t think it’s safe to bring a child into their world given how much danger they are constantly in.

Meanwhile, hihi shows a preference for Jane and commends her performance. He says that the company feels she is ready for a bump and asks her if she would like to replace her John.

She turns it down and the couple decides to go for counseling. They do their best to air out their issues while not revealing the specifics of their job to the counselor.

They give it three sessions before deciding that it just doesn’t work for them. In those three weeks, they encounter their second failure after a mission in the woods.

John gets a mission to take out an agent of a rival company but delays killing her.

Jane shows up at the woman’s house and finds out that John has spent the last month connecting with her and opening up about his issues with Jane.

John shows up and the target realizes that her time is up. She escapes while John and Jane argue about his approach.

John gets his third fail and agrees to leave the house because he’s had enough. Jane’s next mission is to take out John as the punishment for the final failure.

Ending explained:

Till death do us part

Jane gets her order but doesn’t act on it immediately. One morning when she’s feeding her cat, someone fires at her.

They miss her, but end up killing her cat, Max. John has been living with his mother for the past two months.

When they return from the market, John notices something strange before setting foot in the house.

He tells his mother to go out till he says it’s fine to return and then inspects the doorway to find an explosive rigged there.

He sets up a meeting with Jane and the two of them are infuriated with each other.

They meet at a museum but on their way out, Jane traps John in the revolving door with an explosive.

He manages to escape and chases after her. They fight along the way until Jane reaches their house.

She finds John’s mother waiting there, while John is locked outside. He runs into their neighbor and asks if he can use his back door to get into their house.

John’s mother tells Jane that she needs to examine their relationship carefully before deciding to end it.

John finds surveillance of them in the neighbor’s house and assumes they are part of a rival agency. He claims that he’s a real estate agent who is just very interested in their property.

Aggressive remodel

John gets into his house and finds Jane waiting for him. They begin a firefight inside the house, turning the place into a warzone.

They have weapons stashed everywhere and no place is left alone as they attempt to kill each other.

When the conflict gets physical, John asks Jane to stop and after subduing her, takes her to their study where he stabs them both with truth serum.

He wants to have an honest conversation with her and find out whether his feelings for her are worth it.

After getting all their emotions off their chest, they come out with a stronger bond than before.

During their divulging of information, they realize that he didn’t kill Max and she didn’t sabotage his mother’s house.

Toughing it out together

Other John and Other Jane show up after getting a key from hihi. They say that they are there for their super high-risk assignment, taking other ‘Smiths’.

They explain that the captain John and Jane killed in the jungle was a former Smith in hiding. They were presumably the couple of took out the pair of Smiths in the cabin.

Other John and Other Jane treat hihi like a God and love being employed by the company.

They don’t understand why others would try to get out of a perfect situation where they are being compensated adequately.

Hihi can predict their every move even before they make it, so it is pointless to get out of their grasp.

John and Jane use a moment of hesitation to get the jump on the others. Jane shoots Other John in the eye while John gets to a safe spot.

John and Jane go into the panic room and Other Jane waits outside the door. John takes a bullet and is losing blood but Jane asks him to hold on.

She finally decides to go outside and kill Other Jane so that she and John can escape together.

A few flashes of light are seen in the darkness through the windows, and the house is found empty the next morning.

John and Jane’s fate is left unknown.
